Race reports

Good stuff - was that the Vectors only reading one side? Not heard of that issue before, could it be a battery thing?

I rode a 10 on Saturday on a fairly sporting Cheshire course and got round in 23:17 (avg power of 277w) for an 8th place overall. Not the strongest field by any means but top 10 in an Open was a goal for the season so that is nice to achieve anyway.

I also finally got some pictures from the previous week's 10. I'd already swapped out the tail on my Giro Selector for the shallower one and it looks like a good option based on the pictures, it will hopefully help me get a bit lower at the front. I'm going to experiment with helmets a bit this year though as the L Selector is pretty huge vs the actual size of my head, surely can't be good for speed?!

Yeah my first ones, I've had a few issues, thought they were all resolved, think I need to give them a good look at.

Meant I focused on riding rather than looking down, kept a good position with my head up, barely remember peaking at my Garmin. Although I need a mount for my TT bars, as I currently have it on my stem so have to really look down to see what I'm doing.

Second race of the season, second puncture within the first few miles. FML. Essentially zero race miles so far this year. Contemplating going for an absolute kicking at Hog Hill Friday now, just to get some intensity in.

First open TT of the year, still suffering with my cold a little, but had a surprisingly good ride.

Tried to pace it out a little better, by taking it easier on way out, but I felt really good and that taking it easier was about 2W under my FTP....

Seemed to work as I had a good steady ride, not the best of times, but managed to match a guy I was losing to at the end of last season.

Just need to start building up the power and get rid of this damn cold. Weather was pretty much ideal although slight headwind on the way out.

My first podium in A grade! 100km road race in prep for next weekend which is a big annual race attracting hundreds of riders.

I did nothing for 70km knowing the finish suits me.

The others noticed and then started to try and drop me. Closed two guys down at 70km which ended up splitting the bunch. Happy to roll turns then. Ended up down to 5 with 10km to go. I expected two guys to work together as they are mates.

Strong guy goes on the attack, one guy half closes down, I jump to him, 1 second recover then keep going, he pops but two guys just sat on my wheel. Sit up and one comes round but doesn't pull a hard turn, just sits on front of us riding steady. Strong guy still at 10-15 seconds, but pulling away slightly. I attack again, went hard for 20 seconds or so seeing if I could get a gap, I got a bike length or two but decided to sit up,I still thought one of them might work a bit. This was my mistake, go back to status quo of riding steady. I realised that neither of them were going to work so got on the front and tapped out a steady rhythm that would leave me with something in the tank.

1km to go, 90 degree turn onto an average 8% (steeper at the bottom) finish, 25-30 seconds to make up, gonna have to dig deep!

One guy pops straight away almost, side by side with the other chasing the leader. He gets a bike length on me on the steepest bit, I'm in a world of hurt, guy on the moto next to me shouting some encouragement. Ended up being 3rd with the big strong guy holding on to win by less than 5 seconds from 2nd and 3rd. They admitted to working me over, which is fair enough. I'd been sitting on early as a legit tactic so expected it to happen.

Best I could have done is just ride threshold when they had one up the road and limit the gap then all go full gas at the end, I guess 2nd may have been the best result I could have hoped for.

Racing sounds like so much fun after reading the above posts!

Awesome work.

Racing is fun.

I remember thinking I could ride quite quick 3 years ago, then being dropped in C grade by blokes in their 60s. Being amazed by how fast the A grade guys could ride seemingly without trying.

Now I'm the one in A grade, crying when some of the boys from the national road series turn up and rip our legs off. Then they go race nationals, the same thing happens to them, all the way up to the world tour....

Yeah similar here having moved up through the categories. Didn't think I'd ever be competitive at 2nd Cat! Still remember it was a massive thing breaking 20mph average for an hour quite a few years ago!

Race report for this weekend in my blog on the link below, rather than pasting it in here.

Brief report from my 10 on the V718 at the weekend, which was my first time on there and second time on a quick course. Conditions were tough apparently with a lot of people going a minute or so slower than their ride there on Good Friday, but it's still prodigiously fast compared to most other courses in the country.

TTs aren't that interesting compared to road races, but still, flew off down the entry slip road and joined the main carriageway trying to keep my effort steady. I thought coming back would be easier than going out so looked to hold about 290w with a view to averaging about 280w overall. Started tapping out a steady rhythm but immediately this felt faster than I was expecting so I knew coming back could be hard going. Nevertheless, I kept the pace up and pushed on. The turn slip road comes early on this course, around mile 4 so mentally it's tough knowing you have the longer leg coming back, but on the right day the back leg can be really fast.

I came up, round the roundabouts and immediately kicked myself for coming up off my aerobars as these were definitely wide enough to take in tribars on a day when the roads weren't greasy. I tried to pick up my momentum back down the slip road and rejoined the road, dodging a couple of large looking potholes. I knew pretty much immediately this leg would not be easy going - I was going quicker than the out leg but not by much and my legs and throat were already burning.

At about the 7 mile mark, you pass Welton and the road drags upward almost imperceptibly but it really starts to bite. I tried to pick up my effort and get through this section, having it in the back of my head that the final mile or two would be much quicker. I was beginning to have my doubts about whether I could hold the effort so I just focused on keeping my cadence high and holding my head in the right position out of the wind as much as possible. I knew I wouldn't be capable of a strong finish, but I guess that means I had paced my effort well.

Ordinarily that final mile and a bit is very, very quick on the right day as it's the most exposed part of the course and usually benefits from the prevailing wind. On Saturday however I lost nearly 40 seconds here alone compared to the Strava KOM. I reckon better wind would have saved me 15-20 of those seconds although my legs were gone by that point so I couldn't have pushed any harder.

I crossed the line for an official time of 20:56 (PB +59 seconds) and a power PB of 286w (+8w). https://www.strava.com/activities/533834510 There is no doubt this is a fast course but I worked bloody hard for that time!

Looking fast OMS. Good power for 20 mins. The hardest thing I find is going without a drink!

You look like a big unit on the bike Thomas, good crit rider shape, big legs & body for power!

Good write-ups you 3 and all great/encouraging performances :D
Berger getting up to the podium a good bit into his season and 2 very early season great performances. Well done all :)

Berger we need more pictures of Oz racing in the sunshine. Plenty of us can provide you wet/dull race pictures as we go on this season :p

Won't exist from now :D It's just as horrible where he lives in the winter as over here! :D

After my ride last night and ride in this morning, I'm definitely feeling more confident for upcoming TTs now this cold is going. Really hope to be pushing up to 280W over 10 next time around.

Yeah I'm not small, I'm able to get quite a bit lower than most other guys, so like to think I'm still reasonably aero! Any course with a decent amount of climbing though and I tend to lose out. Need to shift a few pounds of excess still too!
