Race reports

Had my 2nd road race of the season this evening.
Ended up with just me and one other team mate in this race. We both know what to do, so there wasn't much discussion of tactics.
It's quite a long neutralised section out to a 7 mile loop which we'll go around 3.5 times. There's a short but steep climb up to the finish that we go up each lap. Less than half a lap into the race and my team mate has gone off the front alone. "Great", i think, I'll get an easy ride whilst the other teams organise a chase. There is no organization - just a series of attacks and counter attacks which keeps the pace high but gives me a hard time because I've got to mark all these attacks.
Another lap goes in and not much has changed, one lone rider out front and a disorganised bunch. The attacks are coming less frequently but harder as the weaker riders have tired and now the strong guys are having their go. I'm in a good position near the front, having just followed an earlier surge, coming into the climb for the second time. It's starting to feel inevitable that somebody is going to get away if this keeps up. On the climb, 2 guys make a move up the right. I'm on the left and boxed in a little but near enough to the front that i can get out. I'm determined to get up there with these guys. It hurts! I'm well into the red but i know that if i can get onto the wheel I'll be able to rest (I'm not going to work with them - I still have a man up the road). I make it across but we don't have much of a gap on the bunch and it comes back together on the fast descent. Still paying for my effort up the climb, I can't push my big gears and drift back through the bunch - and straight out the back! Took about half a lap dangling at 20-30 metres before i get back on - just as we reach the climb. We're all across the road and a car comes the other way, everyone squeezes over and grins to a halt. Somebody topples over and brings those of us behind him to a stop. It's hard to get going again on the hill and I'm off the back of the bunch again now. A friendly service car comes past and tries to help tow me back into the race. I hang on for another half lap or so but my legs are gone. A shake off the head to show that I've given up and a thumbs up to say thanks, I ride the last few miles in on my own.

It's not all points and glory, kids!

Ah man :( I feel even worse for not coming through now dude, I am sorry! With 3 of us things could have been different and certainly not so harsh for you! Not like you to get fired out the back and struggle these days so must have been serious work.

I seen the pictures and K dog smashing it off the front early on. See it didn't pay off for him either though which is a shame.

Onwards and upwards. I'll be there next week so we can have a chat at least on the last few miles in when we got fired out the back :p I am planning to blame my dodgy shoulder lol.

Nah, I just didnt have the legs for it.
I pushed myself far too hard to stay with the attack on the climb and that pretty much ended my race. I did it knowing that I could sit on the back of the break and not do any work - wouldn't have tried so hard to stay with it otherwise.

I did my first 50 mile TT yesterday. TT race reports are dull compared to the road race ones so I'll just go with random thoughts!

-50 is a fun distance to race, especially if you like doing tempo rides for training. The race effort you can manage is a bit more intense but very different to a 10 or 25. If you do long rides semi regularly you'd probably enjoy it (within reason!).
-Having to think about drinks and food makes it a bit more challenging. I went with one bottle and 2 gels plus being well fuelled beforehand which seemed about right.
-The mental side of maintaining concentration and effort over that distance is a real challenge, I got woken up by a few potholes...
-I was really happy to crack 2 hours!

Had a good race last night with xdcx. This is my view, he might be along to post his later:

Nice warm day for it. Got up to 20 degrees on the drive through and was still somewhere around 14-15 when we started. The course was 3 laps of a 13mile loop with a 150metre climb half way round - quite long and not too steep though.
I managed to get a full warmup lap done before the start which was helpful because the race started hard. The first 1.5miles neutralised behind the lead car was done at 29.5mph! Then the flag was pulled in and the race started for real...with a comfortable drop in pace :p Not much really happened in the first half lap, it seemed like everyone was just sitting in and preparing for the hill. There were a few strong riders racing and I wasnt entirely confident that I could match their pace on the climb so I decided I needed a head start and jumped off the front a few miles before the bottom. I built up a little advantage on the flat (maybe 20-30 seconds) then rode at a manageable pace up the climb. Unfortunately, that was wasted effort as the rest of the bunch also rode at a steadyish pace and kept the group together. I was hoping there would be some attacks and I would be able to get in the move as they came past me but I just held 10-20 seconds the whole way up then sat up and waited for the bunch down the descent.
Into lap 2 and there was a bit more activity in the flatter first half of the lap but nothing stayed away and again we were all together going into the bottom of the climb. Xdcx's turn to attack this time and he quickly got a big gap on the bunch as nobody wanted to chase him but was pulled back before the top as the pace kicked up a bit in the bunch around halfway up. The increase in pace had split the bunch and I found myself hanging onto the back of a group of 10 with the rest of the race a little further back. I had another team mate in this group so it was a good opportunity for us but nobody else wanted to drive it and by the time I had worked my way to the front, the rest of the bunch had closed the gap.
Going into the final lap I could feel the pace increasing and I knew it would be hard up the climb this time around. I worked my way up to a good position near the front ready for the climb but noticed that a few guys had gone off the front (a pair together followed by 1 lone rider) and nobody seemed interested in bringing them back so I decided to try my luck again on my own. Similar to what I did on lap 1, I jumped off the front a few miles from the climb and built up a 20-30 second gap going into the bottom of the climb. I knew I didnt have the legs to stay away from them right to the end of the race so I rode steady up the climb again hoping to be able to stay with the front group when they passed me. The climb was taken at a much faster pace this time and lots of guys were getting dropped. The pace was good for me though - it was too fast for any attacks so it was a nice consistent speed which suits me. When we got over the top for the final time, the 'bunch' was down to only 20 riders from the 50ish who started the race (with 3 more riders up the road). I was feeling the effects of my attacks by this point and sat on the back - just happy to be in the bunch. Came past 2-3 guys in the sprint to get 20th.

A good day for me. Much better than the disaster I had last Thursday. Felt strong into the wind and reasonably comfortable on the climb. It'll be my last road race for a couple of months though because I switch to MTB now. Hopefully a good base for the couple of stage races I have planned for later in the year.

Team boss man was 10th, Touch was 20th and I was 30th :p

Our club mate held the bunch perfectly on bottom of climb and it was like a perfect moment for me to head up the road as I am a climber it just opened up to perfection. I got about 20seconds on the bunch and was feeling great but they were so fast up the climb with a cross tail wind and it not being steep enough for me to do any real damage. 3 blokes bridged me and I tried to sit on them and my legs cramped up insane amounts then my shoulder/neck cramped and I felt like **** the entire rest of the race.

Got back onto back of bunch end of lap 2 luckily, where Touch was, he was just sitting comfortable but I felt all warm and fuzzy that my mate was sticking on the back waiting for me to make sure I was OK, he's a lovely one really :) Was very happy to see him on back of bunch the way I was feeling it definitely lifted my morale a lot going into lap 3.

Lap 3 up climb I just sat on a few guys feeling rubbish as touch and our mate were nailing it up the road. I trundled in pretty lonesome after sitting up at top of the climb and taking it easy on the legs in way in.

So that is me had my bad race, after crashing the other week hopefully that's them out of my system. I felt so great when I attacked, legs were good and I was positive then that god awful cramping just crippled me.... Going to try some salt crystal stuff and even more hydrating for next time and also use my warm up oil stuff on the legs for next race and hopefully this will help me get to the bottom of it and solve it as it really is quite unpleasant and bizzare.

Still a superb evening racing with my mates though, still positive :)

I got a 4th in the local race.

I then got a flat, but sealant saved me, it felt like it was going down after riding 5km at the finish, managed another 30km ride home/warm down. Inc a 75kmh descent....

Had about 35psi left in it, banged 120 in there and it seems to have plugged it. 20ml stans in each tub.

Away with work this week, so decided to do two 25 mile TTs this weekend to try to get into shape.

First was unspectacular on a rolling course with a large degree of wind in finishing in 1:01:05. Not bad time with the winner finishing in 53:55. So definitely not a fast day as he is capable of sub 50s.

This morning was much better, although I turned up and they said they'd shut the sign on :S Luckily they squeezed me in, second issue was I didn't know the course at all, so busy scrabbling around looking for directions. Then final nail, I didn;'t know how to get to the start, went up one road thinking it was there but was miles out so had to ride back around and get back, luckily had a chunk of time to make it and find it.

So I thought it was the final nail as I then took a wrong turn, so the 25 turned into 25.16. I missed out on a 25 PB on again a windy rolling course by only 10 seconds, and I reckon I gave away about 30-40 seconds at the missed turn. So very happy as I pushed much more power in the last 5 miles. Should easily be on for a much quicker and hopefully PB 10 come Wednesday night. Slowly feel like my legs are coming back to me.

Wrote up a report, then lost it. Anyway, legs are coming back and getting used to the bike. Managed to get a 266W average for 10 miles, and feel like more is coming. Managed to stay dry as well somehow today, after 3 of my club mates decided not to travel with the dubious forecast! Hope it is dry on Wednesday for a new 10 mi PB with some luck!

I know this is for cycling race reports but nobody reads the triathlon topic! If not appropriate, FT can remove.:(

Did my first ever 70.3 triathlon today at Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire and it went pretty well. I was hoping for anything under 6 hours but somehow managed to do it in 4h59m dead on! Weather was forecast to be bad but it ended up being perfect.

I won't bore you with too much detail...

Swim: 14C water temp, a bit cold for my liking as it took a few 100m to warm up and get my breathing right as the cold leaves me gasping a bit. Rolling swim start meant it was less of a cluster **** but there was still a bit of getting punched and kicked! I'm not a fast or strong swimmer so I'm pleased with the time as it is my fastest ever wetsuit swim for 1900m (probably swam further due to not having a line to follow!).

Bike: Only 1900ft/580m ascent made this a fast bike course. I pushed harder in the first half and faded a bit in the second according to my power meter. Roads were not closed so I was stuck drafting slow lorries a couple of times.
Overall, happy with the bike as I made up time from my slow swim and I think if I pushed any harder I would have been too destroyed on the run. Averaged 22mph for 56.6 miles.

Run: I was ruined following the bike and I thought it was going to be a disaster. My legs started cramping up in the first two miles. I decided to walk through the aid stations and take my time to drink down the energy drink on offer. This helped massively. I carried on steadily for the rest of the distance, trying not to push too hard as I felt imminent cramp all over my legs. I was delighted to cross the line in under 5 hours as this is the benchmark for a 70.3.

Sorry again, I promise to take up bike racing next year when I've had enough of being a triantelope.:D It's funny, the stereotype of triathletes not being able to climb hills is so true!:o

Will write up my toc report at some point.

Everyone bloody pbing on the local 10 course today. Typical the one time I don't ride it conditions could not be more perfect.

So CX race today, first since January I think. Was a 2ish hour race, so pacing was all important, but meant it was good practise for a 50mi TT in 3 weeks.

Course suited me being quite open with longer uphill drags rather than the usual CX short sharp stuff that doesn't suit a tester like me.

I started off quite near the back moving up slowly on the first lap, but sitting in behind where I could to save energy and just picking up places. After the first couple of laps I was roasting, but settled into a nice pace and just ensured I kept my fluids up (after having the ***** first thing).

Once I got the first hour out of the way and a couple of gels, a quick pit stop to grab another drink and gel, I started to wind it back up a little, establishing a good rhythm on the long drags and pulling away from guys I'd been with for the first hour, and starting to lap multiple people and then picking off people one by one.

Second to last lap, I had good legs left and started to push on, putting myself into the red a bit more on the long climbs, continuing to rise up, noticing I was passing people who would usually beat me convincingly in a normal CX race, more and more people were blowing and I must have made up a good 6 or 7 places on the last lap.

14th in Age Category and 24th overall out of 92 riders. Beating some guys who would usually beat me comprehensively. A good event, and really enjoyed it, felt quite rough for couple of hours after, but think my dodgy stomach this morning didn't help.

Tour of Cambridgeshire Report - 4/6/16

Week ago Friday I ventured up to Peterborough to ride the Tour of Cambridgeshire which was a UCI closed road Time Trial. After a good few hours in the car I met up with a club mate and recce’d the course. We both commenting it was lumpier than expected and the road surface was not as smooth as we'd hoped.

As I wasn't off until later in the day I rode down to a view point on the course to cheer on my club mate. Within about a minute of being there a lady punctured right in front of me. I offered assistance, but her tub had slashed so her ride was over. This got me a bit nervous for the afternoon. I waited around for another 30 minutes or so for my club mate to pass by then went back for some pre race lunch. Getting a good idea on a line to take for one of the faster flowing bends.

Got the showground about 90 minutes before my start time and sorted myself out, starting to get pretty nervous. Went to the warm up area (60 or so set up turbos) and caught up with my club mate who had just found out he had qualified for the worlds with his time. I asked for some tips on the course and how he rode talking whilst warming up. My warm up flew by chatting away, but getting a good 30 minutes in before lining up on the start ramp.

At this point the nerves kicked in a little and my HR shot up. But soon enough I got the 5,4,3,2,1 countdown and I was off, rolling off the start ramp out onto the tight technical start/finish section. Once out of this section it took my head a few minutes to realise there would be no cars coming past. I settled into a rhythm, but had realised I went out a little too hard, but with the adrenaline flowing was able to keep this effort up.

Passing through the first couple of tight turns I was going well making sure not to fall off, with power where I was hoping and feeling good. The miles ticked by and after flying through some of the more flowing sections I was back onto the home straight, having passed a number of riders, and with all the big lumps out of the way started to up the intensity. Before I knew it I was back in the finish area with 1KM to go where Phill (clubmate) was there to return the favour from the morning and “cheer” me on to the finish.

Flying through the finish line, I shot past the marshalls onto the grass section, absolutely exhausted, but finishing with a 41:08.75, which placed me 116th/800 and 37th in my age category. This placed me as the last qualifier in my age category for the World Champs next year. (alas I won't be going as a) it's in Perth, Aus b) I'd need a new bike that doesn't break every single UCI rule :D

The experience was fantastic being able to ride without any worry about what’s coming behind you and being able to take the best lines into the corners, and having the warm up all sorted for you and with the exact timing etc. Will probably try to sign up for next year as a one off event. Hopefully some more will spring up around the country as closed roads riding makes it so much more enjoyable.
