Racers - What should I be playing?

After visiting the museum at Le Mans, I've got the urge to try a racing game but I know absolutely nothing about them.

This is how it starts, a year later and £8,000 poorer

Get yourself a wheel and an iRacing subscription. Automobilista2 never gets any love, but I highly rate it as well. It's also cheap, looks fantastic, and has great VR support (probably the best VR of any racing game)

The new Forza Motorsport is out. Pick up gamepass for a month or two and try that. It’s more ‘simcade’ but it’s pretty much designed for the controller.

+1 for Forza Motorsport IMO

it’s a cheap option on game pass ~£7 iirc and is on the arcade side of sim which fits the OP’s request!

No not the same. They come from the same developer however:

AC - Very much a platform for modders, comes with ok base level of content (feeling a bit dated now), however what makes AC shine is the vast amount of community produced mods/tracks/cars that effectively cover pretty much every facet of motorsport, and bring the game very much right up to date. Some mod quality can be very questionable and can range from janky AF to professional developer quality, you just have to go by community reviews. Online racing can be a bit of a minefield and its pretty much necessary to be part of a league/community to get "good" racing.

ACC - Solely focuses on GT racing, fully licensed from SRO motorsports. Very good selection of tracks with all DLC. Cars are primarily GT3 however they have subsequently added GT4 and there are some single make cup cars as well like Porsche and Lambo. ACC in my opinion is a step forward in immersion, the sound and feel of the game are such an amazing experience. Though going by what some real world drivers have commented I think to some extent real world driving physics has taken a slight hit to enable the overall atmosphere of the game. Online is hit and miss on this, but there are a couple of projects to help improve this like LFM and PitSkill.

Thanks for this. I might dip my toes in with AC as I'll be able to drive the car that started this whole thing for me and it's cheap as well, and if I get the bug (and tbh there's not much else that interests me right now) I can always go from there

ACC felt a lot ‘slower’ to me. Id drive at 100mph into a corner and it would seem like 20mph. To me that not realistic or fun at all.
ACC wasnt much better but at least there was more a sense of speed.

Dirt Rally 2 is fantastic, but Rally of course instead of GT / formula

I like the Crew 2, its not a sim but it can be got cheap (gold version for ~£10-15) as it’s been out years. They still add new content every week/month and have weekly events. The map is one of the biggest game maps, takes hours to drive round! It also has bikes, boats, planes, and hovercrafts.

I’ve got access to F1 22, Grid Legends and Need for Speed Unbound as part of a yearly subscription to EA Play for £19.99. Plenty there to keep you occupied especially F1 as it’s a simulation of probably the greatest Motorsport there is.

F1 22 isnt simulation, its more arcade racer. Assetto Corsa, ACC or iRacing if you want sim

Fair enough it’s nice to be able to drive on famous circuits too.
Id try Assetto corsa, great fun if you have a wheel and stuff. I sold my gear but miss it sometimes - mainly for Dirt 2.

This is Assetto corsa, great car and track

Assetto Corsa, plus porsche pack 3 for the 917K . Find mods for track (classic so no chicanes on mulsanne) and opposition (512S, 330LM etc)
Group C is a lot of fun too
