Racist 1936 Mural!

The reason the gollywog was so racist it because it excentuated features associated with black stereotypes, for example large lips, dreadlocks and if you pull down his pants you'll find a giant gentleman sausage*

*may not be true

The whole point about Gollywogs was that they were the only "Doll" (apart from a Teddy Bear) that a little Boy could have in bed without being thought a Pinch of Snuff!

For people of My generation, Gollywogs were much loved toys. As were Books like "The Story of Little Black Sambo", which while stereotypical, were not unpleasantly so and were a way of introducing young children to the idea of exotic other parts of the world (The Tigers were stereotypical too! ;) )

Of course, I was brought down to Earth somewhat on my first encounter with a real live Black man on the London Underground! (At the age of 8)

He tried to Rob me! :(

Somebody said something about removing the artwork from the school and placing it in a museum or gallery, i think thats a terrific idea but unfortunately i dont think this will happen.
The school will panic and give in to the over reaction of one woman and the media storm she created and paint all over it.

If we'd known how much trouble this was going to bring, we'd have picked our own cotton.

:o

:p

Cretin.

I expect you're right, sadly. We should be preserving our heritage, despite the connotations. We still retain and treasure many appalling bits of history.

I don't understand what this woman is thinking. I can imagine that being called a *** is offensive, but this a picture of a black doll, not a racist poster. Hopefully she gets laughed out of court, or becomes the new poster woman for gollywogs.

On a similar note, someone emailed me this today. While they are at the very least cringe-worthy now, it's interesting to see just how acceptable sexism and racism was a matter of decades ago.

Back on topic, I doubt they'll paint over the mural considering the cash spent on restoring it. Hopefully common sense will prevail.

I can only imagine the **** storm that would erupt if one of these was plastered on a billboard today

What about this one?

I remember thinking they were pushing their luck with that :p

You're putting the cart before the horse there. Golliwogs were invented in the late 1800s whereas the word "***" didn't come about until the 1920s and it is thought to have come from golliwog, not the other way around.

You're taking what I said out of context. *** IS a derogatory term used toward certain ethnic groups, I said nothing about the origins of the Gollywog doll though. No cart before the horse.

You claimed that Golliwog was like making a doll called "Gollinigger" which implies the '***' part of the name was used as a racial epiphet. It wasn't, ***[probably] came from the golli doll and not that the golli doll was called a golliwog because the inventor wanted to add a racial slur to the name.

So it's not like calling a doll today a gollinigger because anyone doing that would be deliberately adding a known racial slur to the name, which didn't happen in the case of the golliwog.

Correct. In the context of the conversation, that is the analogy I was making in order to explain my point.

I did put a wiki quote up, which is where you seem to be getting confused between what I was saying and what Wiki was saying. This is what wiki was saying :

As with other slang and prima facie profanity used in contemporary Australian English,[1] the ethnic term "***" may be employed either aggressively or affectionately within differing context. In Australia, the term '***' is used as a slur or pejorative against people of Mediterranean ethnicity who reside in the main cities of Australia. The slur became widely diffused with an increase in immigration from Mediterranean and Southern Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries

So it's not like calling a doll today a gollinigger because anyone doing that would be deliberately adding a known racial slur to the name, which didn't happen in the case of the golliwog.

Wrong. I'm not going to explain why. You need to figure that out for yourself. I'll give you a clue. Pretend it's not 2013 and is in fact 1930.

This was painted back in a time when attitudes and sensitivities were different. From what I can gather, those dolls were much loved and cherished by children at the time.

They were originally supposed to be magical creatures, black gnomes iirc, not human, (like dark elves) it's only people minds that made them a racist over time :(

Stupid political correctness.

In the 50's I collected paper golliwogs from Robertsons jams to get metal golliwog badges. I remember my sister and I had a large golliwog.

In the 80's, my daughter had one which she loved.

I am the most racially liberal person I know.

It's even funnier when you consider that the name "Golliwog" predates the word (well abbreviation) "***" XD

The was never anything racist about them, it's just peoples minds that twisted it. Sad really as I really liked my Gollywog as a child, and I am sure the fact my toy's had different coloured skin effected how my outlook on race developed for the better.
