I have a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6990 but I'm finding it far too noisy when gaming. What are my options when it comes to alternative cooling? are there quieter fans available or something? Also how easy would it been to fit any of your suggested alternatives?

Thanks

Jase

I don't think there are any after market coolers for the 6990 yet or if any are in development. I know where your coming from though, it can be a noisy card under load, i'm currently waiting on a waterblock for mine so i can add it to my loop. What case do you currently have?

Don't think there is 3rd party cooler that's compatable with 6990 yet, and the reference cooler come with the card is as loud as a hair-dryer...but I guess you already know this. This is why most people wouldn't even recommend getting the 6990 and suggest it would be better to just go crossfire 6950 or 6970.

As it is, I don't think there's much you can do, unless you can somehow feed the card cool-air that's significantly lower than ambient temperature...

The case is a Corsair Graphite 600T Ltd Edition, and yeah the noise is far too bad playing BF3 beta I have no option but to wear headphones :(

Try and make a custom fan profile with MSI Afterburner.

I've been toying with mine on my Crossfire'd 5850's and I'm managed to drop temps a little and quieten the fans a little.

I did this by increasing the fan speed slightly lower down in the temperature scale.

I only chose the 6990 as I knew I would water cool it so noise was not going to be an issue. I had forgotten quite how loud gpu fans can be and was suprised when i heard the fan ramp up to 2800rpm, sounded like a jet taking off lol !

Would definitely be quieter although I don't like the idea of dumping 400w into your case, you'd need some decent airflow to get rid of that.

Thanks for the info, and thanks for taking the time to look Marine-RX179. JeffyB, you say you're waiting for a waterblock for yours, which is that. I know nothing about watercooling, so what the minimum I could get away with to cool this.

At the moment I'm considering selling it and buying a new pre-built system with watercooling. Obviously that's not ideal due to the cost :(

What case do you have? You would need barbs, a res, pump, block, radiator and depending on the case, some new fans.

Watercooling is not as mystical as it may seem, if you can build a pc then it's not a huge jump in skill level so long as you read plenty, ask questions when you need to and are patient. Cost wise the blocks for the 6990 are around £120, add a pump, rad, res, fittings tubing and you've already spent around £300, really does add up rapidly.
