Radeon 7950 issues...

VRM sensors are borked? Thats a software issue, not a problem with the card.

Voltages are fine, thats the specified load voltage for the 7950's with boost. Your temps are good too, so the voltage is clearly not a problem. I really dont see why this is an issue to you:confused:

The fan on full when you bootup is normal, its so you know your fan is working.

Having nvidia drivers on your system is not a good idea if you are running a AMD card, its perhaps responsible for some of your glitches.

And finally, whats your PSU? The burning smell is probably your PSU.

And how do you know that for certain? I've checked the VRM readings with various monitoring software and all come to the same conclusion (sensors constantly stuck at 24C no matter what the operating condition)... It's very possible there is a problem with the card (which i believe there is).

Voltage spiking to 1.43V is not fine, and even the 1.25V boost voltage is not too good either. It's an issue to me as it's causing unecessary coil whine which is very distracting and not something you want from a £260 GPU (especially in this day and age!).

I know some fans have a 2 second blast to remove dust, but 7 seconds on full speed without showing my POST screen is not right (my PC booted to the POST screen within 1-2 seconds with my previous GPU and the 660 Ti i'm currently borrowing).

It's perfeclty fine if you know how to cleanup the old drivers. Anyway, i installed the nVidia card AFTER returning the Radeon 7950 to OcUK, so the issue is definitely not nVidia driver related.

And finally, whats your PSU? The burning smell is probably your PSU.

It's not the PSU as i had it out on the desk whilst locating the nasty squealing noise (which ended up being the GPU). My PSU is a 'Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold' which is a high quality 600W (700W peak) modular unit... It's more than capable ;)

Anyway, i also tried the 7950 in my girlfriends rig which is an entirely different spec and got the same results. I'm going to have to take this issue further as i'm not happy. My Radeon 7950 is not fit for purpose as far as i'm concerned :(.

Oh well I hope you get it sorted.

I still think the PSU is the problem, its not delivering clean, ripple free power which is why you you get the noise.

Do you run with v-sync on? That eliminates all whine for me.

Try GPU-z for VRM monitoring, you havent mentioned that I dont think. Its strange you dont believe the temperature monitoring but you believe the 1.43v reading.

Remember to enable fast boot in your bios or whatever the function is called on your mobo. Perhaps updating your Mobo bios would help too, as some boards have compatibilty issues that are solved with upgrading the bios.

My mobo has the latest bios (i needed it for my 3570K CPU) and i've tried GPU-Z (the 1.43V reading was shown using several monitoring utils)... I also don't think it's the PSU as it's fine with everything i throw at it (and it gets great reviews :)). The GPU does the exact same thing in the other PC which uses a different PSU. Also, nothing in the bios gets changed when i switch cards, so the delayed POST screen with GPU fans on 100% is to do with the Radeon 7950 card (other cards work fine).

Anyway, nothing in my PC should be making noise as it uses all solid caps, solid chokes and rds(on) mosfets etc... I blame shoddy components or poor workmanship when it comes to the graphics card (even the soldering behind the VRM's looked bubbled/blistered with a couple of holes... I wonder if OcUK checked that too?).

Got the GPU back today and the faults are still there (as i expected ). I might have to try and RMA this through HIS directly as whoever tested this card at OcUK must have been wearing earplugs (they didn't even test it with the games that i specified and didn't mention anything about the stuck VRM temp sensors or the dodgy soldering on the back of the card)... It even arrived wet! Yes the card was actually wet inside the packaging (i had to let it dry and reach room temperature before installing).

I know the faults have nothing to do with any of the hardware in our PC's and believe it or not i've been building and repairing PC's for over 12 years now, so i know what i'm doing and can't be fobbed off! I ordered over £1k of stuff from OcUK and everything is perfect except the graphics card :(. All i wanted was a replacement (same brand/model would have been fine)... Why would i bother going through the RMA procedure and posting the item at my expense if it was fine?

'STALKER: Call of Pripyat' made the graphics card scream and the game crashed back to the desktop after just a couple of minutes... GPU-Z reported a maximum core clock and memory clock speed of 00000.0 Mhz (this is a first!).

I'm late to the thread, but I'd post in the customer services section. 5UB is great for getting things sorted. :)

Cheers, i've just done that so hopefully something can be sorted! I've never had any major issues with GPU's in the past... It squeals and fizzes a bit when running Unigine Heaven, but it's almost silent when running Furmark .

Hope you get it sorted.

A guy here managed to remove his coil whine by running Crysis constantly.

I also heard that coil whine can eventually disappear if the PC is left on for ages while it's squealing (i think it's a bit of a myth to be honest)... I left my PC on the STALKER menu for a few hours and all i got was a corrupted/garbled mess when i turned the monitor back on. The PC had crashed :(.
