Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

so a lot of retailers received their RX480 stock, reviewers apparently also received their samples to review, the next week we might see some definitive leaks about performance.

Where'd you find this out?

Seems weird to have a 29th launch day and NDA lift if they're already in stock.

Thanks to our friends from HardwareBattle we get to see the first Radeon RX 480 with custom-designed cooler. The new Sapphire NITRO card features brand new silver cooler shroud, packed in dual-slot and dual-fan design. The side of the card features LED illuminated Sapphire logo. According to the source, the colors will change depending on the fan speed, GPU temperature or custom-profile configured by the user.

Most Radeon RX 480 cards that will be released on June 29th will be equipped with 8GB GDDR5 memory. 4GB models are also expected, but availability of such cards will depend on AIBs.

According to our information, some european stores already received their stock, and they are ready to sell Polaris 10-based graphics cards. In China a company called Dataland (Chinese PowerColor brand), was already selling places on reservation lists.

Meanwhile some reviewers already have their cards for tests, so we expect to see a lot of leaks in the coming days.

Not this again.

AMD claim 275w for the FuryX, not 375w, it uses 250-300w in gaming on average depending on utilisation.

The 2.8x is only in VR. 2.0x is the official average.

So its using what they say it does.

So you would agree the RX 480 is anything 'up to' 150 watts, not 'more'

Right?

I would also like your source for the VR comment, don't just tell me where i can find it because i have read that conference and it is not in it.
The actual statement with a link.

Would be nice to see some more definitive benchmarks.

crossing my fingers for AMD, i really hope the RX480 is 980 level of performance, that would make it such a huge success.
it's good to have a node shrink, but what does it matter for ppl who cannot have a taste for the new finfet with a 400-600£ budget.
a 200£ budget guy would get significant performance boost, and even ppl with 100£ budget might be appealed into stretching another 60£ to get the 4Go version that could practicaly double their performance.
pff now im all hyped :p

I'm optimistic about the 480 and I think it will be a real winner for AMD. 390x/980 performance in a small chip, half the power, and some much needed architectural changes. What I can foresee happening is DX11 performance is much closer to DX12, because the front-end changes will help keep the card much better utilized. The performance per a watt will be much closer to nvidia I think, still a little behind, but not enough to really make a difference.

It will certainly make the 1060 very hard to price for nvidia. They will be similar in performance I expect but I'm sure nvidia wanted to price closer to $300.

I do hope AMD have a healthy margin on the 489. I expect this is hard to calculate directly because AMD are contractually obliged to use GF for a certain number of wafers. So kind of an indirect subsidy for Polaris.

well look at the bright side, if the 480 sells extremly well and AMD catch some market share, they will be able to slap ppl with a significant margin with Vega.
if 480 does very little to market share, AMD would need to cut on Vega's margins too, and thats when i would get worried about the financial impact of this strategy on AMD.

Having no luck selling my 380 so far over here... if I don't... i may wait it out till whatever is better than the 480. (480x, 490?, 1060?)

Not "most". Just the minority enthusiast segment that makes up places like the OCUK forums. If it delivers that performance at this price, what it will be doing is turning high-end graphics into the mainstream.

Meant most of "us", as in those active on the forum. It will not bring "high-end" into the mainstream, as it is still going to be a lower-end part if it performs like the 290/390x, in comparison to Pascal and Vega. The GTX 1060 is probably going to be as fast or faster, so I don't really see AMD owning this territory either. Only thing great about DX12 is that you aren't as reliant on AMD to deliver decent drivers as before, and because both consoles tend to utilize async shaders more and more, I can foresee the RX 480 performing decently in newer titles (especially after the launch of the updated versions). :p

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ5wYVu-tM8

we could see the card with a power draw of 90W under load :D

they said in the slide of the ashes of the singularity benchmark better price performance+ efficiency

which would mean 2 cards also draw around 180w or less :O

is this power consumption discussion still going on? watch this and you can see what we know and how the power consumption can be

Whatever it is its half the power consumption or less for the same performance or more.

Can't grumble at that and be taken seriously.

Its okay humbug. Back when 970/980 released power consumption was the next best thing. Ohh look this card uses hardly any power compared to similar performing cards. Because Nvidia... Now Amd no on cares and overlooks this feat lol.

Well what people might be referring to is that if it is only 390/970-390x/980 performance, the 970 had a 145w tdp and the 980 had a 165w tdp, and that was 20 months ago.

If the tdp of this is only under 150w even the perf per watt isn't all that wonderful.

Obviously if AMD do manage to get it under 100w for that level of performance, then yes it will be good.

TDP is not the same as power draw

TDP is not the same as power draw

Well that is roughly what they drew as well so in this case it is. Call it what you want, but the average power draw for the 970 was ~145w and the average power draw of the 980 was ~165w.

If the Rx480's performance is between the 970 and 980 and only draws a bit less than 150w then it wont be that impressive compared with something we have had for 20 months. Big gains for AMD against the 390/390x, obviously but not in the market in general.

But who knows it might only draw about 100w which would be pretty good. We will have to wait and see.

TDP is not the same as power draw

Very true

The latest intel CPUs have a TDP of 140watts, in actual use some of them could be drawing over 300watts with overclocking.

Before anyone says overclocking is a different case, the CPUs come with unlocked multipliers as standard and are designed to be overclocked.

That also works the other way round. Some staunch AMD supporters were claiming that nobody cares about power useage when the Fury X was released but now it is important. Not a dig at you but a comical observation.

So it absolutely MUST beat 390 performance by a significant amount and I don't mean 390X performance for a whopping saving of ~£50.

I'm conflicted about this.

On the one hand, AMD has publicly said they want VR spec cards - min 390 perf in their words - to be "affordable".

Which *implies* a price reduction for that perf from where it was with the 390.

If they release a 390 perf card for 390 prices, then they've failed to deliver their own mission statement.

On the other hand, for the past three generations, AMD have only (meaningfully) improved the perf of their very top end offering.

And in the £180 - £200 price bracket, perf has not improved for the last two gens or more. Thus perf/£ has stagnated for several years now.

So I have very little confidence at this point.

Will they deliver their mission statement? Or will this be an "*********** dream"... two weeks or so to find out.
