Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Yeah, and, your point is? :D

Each to their own i guess :)

To me it looks like a showerhead, if it didn't have all those dots around it it wouldn't look half as bad, IMO :)

lol yeah, i see what you mean, but to me it just looks straightforward and to the business. Considering i use a sound proofed case with no side window its not like i look at the hardware once its installed.

i looked at that steam VR benchmark and one thing that sticks out in it is 'Low power vr' in big letters above the benchmark figures. So it could be the part at base clocks for that performance. (1080mhz) which seems reasonable. but without the talk that went with the slide then we don't understand the reasoning behind the slide.

I agree that some context would be useful and the results are a little strange but it is at least an official soucre form AMD, and not some rumour from someones basement in china.

Maybe, but is there ever really anything such as 'overkill' when it comes to keeping your processors cool? At least within reason?

I'd rather have a nano type shroud and a similar heatsink to the sapphire 285/380 itx.
But if you have the space then a dual fan would be ideal like the dual x 7850.

The results aren't strange if you understand how the benchmark works. It is not a traditional benchmark that rates based on average framerate, but by being able to not only hit a base framerate level, but also the framerate consistency. So if a card is fast, but has big or frequent drops, it will score worse than it would in a 'normal' benchmark.

What I'd take from that is that if they're using old drivers, it's quite possible the card performed adequately by normal gaming standards, but did not perform great by VR standards, which requires a very consistent framerate, particularly with SteamVR-specific applications, whereas Oculus SDK apps will have asynchronous timewarp applied smoothing over the bumps quite admirably.

I wonder if AMD will have two modes for this - standard and a "boost" mode which ups clockspeeds but at the expense of power and temperature.

If AMD then says the standard mode is the normal operating mode for the card, they can quietly side step if overclocked cards run somewhat hotter or have worse performance/watt.

Quite likely, and might be software app controlled like the silent | gaming | OC modes for MSI cards.

I must admit - the longer it goes on the less i trust WCCFTech...

Pumping out an article stating it can hit 1400-1500mhz on air just smells of them being able to get hold of actual OC benchmarks after promising them, i just get the feeling we'll be quite underwhelmed by the time some concrete info comes out. I hope not - but smells fishy on their part.

Wccftech has never, ever been 'trustworthy'. They just pump out every rumor they find, no matter how conflicting, so long as it sounds somewhat plausible.

The stock clock is 1266mhz as well so isn't even like 1500mhz is THAT amazing in the grand scheme of things. It certainly isn't going to make up any ground on the 1000 series really as that is a ~20% overclock and the 1070 can overclock to around 2.1ghz on air (so about 20% as well)

Can you feel your mind slipping away from you?

Mine is about walk out on me :o

:)

Its like waiting for one of them really fancy but not very expensive mortar fireworks that is about to be lit

what is it going to do god knows...all we know is that the fuse is long very long takes 12 days to reach it before launch...then will know if its a dud or a really loud & colourful one .....

1500Mhz is not a huge overclock from 1266Mhz, its 18%, my 970 does over 30% for gaming.

Even the Fury-X does 10%+

What he said was it overclocks to 1400Mhz as it is, 1500+ with added volts.

MSI AB is not compatible for voltage unlocks, it will be eventually but he also said AMD will be releasing their own overclocking app with over-volting.

It's not about 480 vs 1070, it's simply the potential of the 480 to get 980Ti/1070-like performance in general(since those are known benchmarks and provide very impressive performance).

Big IF, though.

Yeah i like him. i'm looking forward to his take on the card when he has one, i hope AMD are sending him one.

Think he as to buy one ...but yes a great journalist down to earth and i expect is reviews will be the same no nonsense ...

If AMD don't send him one anyway i will be sending a very strongly worded Email to Roy. i say that jokingly but, i will. :D

I sure i saw amd joe asking adoredtv to contact him on one of his videos,or might have been on reddit.

So maybe amd will send him a 480 to review.
