Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

The stock clock is 1266mhz as well so isn't even like 1500mhz is THAT amazing in the grand scheme of things. It certainly isn't going to make up any ground on the 1000 series really as that is a ~20% overclock and the 1070 can overclock to around 2.1ghz on air (so about 20% as well)

Not quite right

1070 core speed = 1506
Stock boost = 1683

Therefore if they can hit 2.1Ghz its a 25% overclock over stock boost

The 480 would need to hit to 1582 to match it which maybe is acheivable.

So basically oth side will have similar headroom on their overclocks.

Yes, we all accept that if the 480 overclocks to 1500-1600 then it will be beating a GTX 1070 but then the 1070 overclocvks and pulls away.

I suppsoe the point is that if you can buy a card fro half the price of 1070 whcih then can match a stock one then its goo bang for buck.

Or look at it this way even overclocked the 1070 will be 86% more expensive for 25% more performance and then the gtx 1080 will be 200% more expensive for only 56% more performance.

Yes buy a 1080 if you want the absolute best, i think AMD is going to take the bang for buck.

And I would be more than happy for gtx 1070 stock performance for a $200 card.

Amd said the range of cards from $100 to $300 would be released on the 29th,so i cant see why they would not release the $199 rx480 4gb version on day one.

lol really? They were rough numbers :P. Also NVidia cards almost always boost higher than the reference boost so most stock/reference 1070s probably boost themselves to nearer 1750mhz

Always been the same with graphics cards generally. You want the best/fastest, you pay for it and price/performance drops off a cliff as you get to the high end.

Made me giggle :)

Lmao.

This about sums up the overclocking on the gtx1070

"Maximum overclock of our sample is +469 MHz to the GPU's base clock, which increases max Boost from 1873 MHz to 2088 MHz (11% overclock), and 2330 MHz on the memory (16% overclock)."

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1070/27.html

This sample was boosting to 1873 so way higher than stock. I would bet it's pretty similar to most reviews without going through them all.

It will be interesting to see how Amd's boost works. It sort of looks like you choose the boost clock you want as your maximum as everything points to them all being 1266mhz. I think we would be seeing differences in the boost clock on benches unless it's just stating the stock boost.

I get my 1070 on the 27th. Will be hard work keeping it unopened until the NDA lift 2 days later :p

Then there's the matter of delays if the 480 turns out to be as good as everyone says :o

I just want a card that can do minimum of 60fps @1440p although I think Vega is the only thing that will do that for me.
Yea, this probably wont be that card. I really consider a 980Ti to be the 'base' for 1440/60fps if you want to stick with High/Ultra settings for basically any game.

So unless this 480 can properly match a 980Ti/1070, I'd say that it's still more suited to 1080/60fps with just about all the bells and whistles most games will allow(though there will still be some it cant do).

If you've got a 1440p monitor, I'd say you have four current options:

980Ti
Titan X
1070
1080

But there will surely be more upcoming options:

1080Ti/Pascal Titan
Baby Vega
Daddy Vega

Only thing is the latter options will likely cost quite a bit more. Perhaps AMD can pull out some amazing value for baby Vega, but there's a good chance that wont come out til 2017, so it might depend on how long you can wait.

Honestly, this is the whole reason I've still not bitten on a 1440p monitor. Really creates some pressure to spend money on that GPU upgrade without many options.

That thread went on for a year and three months where as this thread is only 2 weeks 3 days old.

To be fair as well there's also the other original Polaris thread which has about 6.8k posts and started this January before it fragmented off into this thread. That said that thread was mostly Pascal talk so I'm not sure if that counts for or against Polaris.:rolleyes::rolleyes::eek:
