Thing is how much faster is a 980ti stock over a 980 and hence so is a 1070?

So basically Gibbo has either confirmed the 480- doesnt match a 980 at stock or you cant get 20% overclock from it to match a stock 1070/980ti.

Either way the bubble has burst

Yeah its the games when it doesnt work which makes me want to swap to a single 980ti esp now they have dropped in price.

But a lot of the time it would just be sideways so not worth the money/hassle of swapping.

No its not though. It should easility be able to do a 20% overclock eg the 1.5Ghz confirmed by Sapphire yet Gibbo says we are dreaming if we think thats comes close to a 980ti.

If the stock 480 is at 390x/980 performance a 20% overclock should put it exactly at 980ti/1070 performance. That is the worry/concern.

Yes but wouldn't you get better than 980ti performance with 2x480 for approx £400? Even if Xfire fails on you can still swap back to one 480 and still have good performance for the price.

At stock there is a 25% difference between the 980ti and gtx980 at 1440p. A decent clocking gtx980 could in theory reach gtx980ti performance.

Maybe Gibbo is just used to the performance of OC 980ti models which are way faster.

Maybe. But I would be impressed it AMD released a $199 card which when overclocked match a reference 980ti.

Thats one hell of a card for bang for buck.

Yeah, i meant at stock it should be those values.

Either they dont overclock very well at all or they are only 970 performance at standard in the first places.

An overclocked 980 doesn't match a 980ti.

Why would I pay £300 for the 980? When a 480 will be better in dx12, will run cooler, quieter, improve with drivers and cost less.

You and Humbug were in your own little bubble, you convinced yourselves that it was going to match the 980ti with no real evidence, just rumours.

Speculating about performance is fun, and nothing wrong with been optimistic either. But building your hopes up before any real info appeared is just stupid.

Well according to Gibbo, possible not! The way he has described it, its not going to be any faster than my 290x, just cheaper.

I paid £15 for one about a year and a half ago for use with my then 3 screen eyefinity setup. Which worked - which meant it was the real deal as I wouldn't have been able to get eyefinity working without it being active dual link.

Just went off to see if they are still easily available and the first result I found was my Dual link cable at <£6.

I just needed the overclocked 480 to be close to a 980ti. Again you have just said and assumed its going to be faster than a 980. Clearly it might not be.

What bubble - people making OTT predictions and having false expectations.

I pretty much said it would hover around R9 390X levels for months now.

Plenty of people like me have £150 to £200 cards like a GTX960 - at 2560X1440 an R9 390X is nearly double the speed of a GTX960.

I suspect the RX470 might end up being a very nice improvement closer to £150 to £175 too.

I expect it will be 50% faster than the current cards in its price bracket like the GTX960 and R9 380.

Plus even try having an R9 390X in a smaller SFF rig like mine - the cards are huge and the TDP is way too high.

I would have probably gone with a GTX970 but in the end getting a good deal on a GTX960 and me not wanting another card with a weird memory controller(I had the GTX660 which did the same) meant I didn't.

The last set of TPU figures would mean the RX480 is probably at least 20% to 25% faster than a GTX970 for around the same price,so with a shorter card consuming even less power and we know how the GTX970 does in DX12 when compared to an R9 390X,so I expect in newer DX12 titles it would be more.

We also don't know if the final review drivers will add anything to performance yet.

So,personally not dissapointed as it is where I thought it will be.

1440p isn't that demanding, if you cannot use VSR, just calculate -25% fps off 1080p

He did say that Xfire "is another matter" or something along those lines so I am guessing they are good cards to run in Xfire and have some major driver and performance advantages with Xfire?
