Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

32 Raja ROPS

32 ROPs????? Is this made for 720p gaming or what!!??? :D :p

32ROPS but 16% higher clocks.

You have to remember that the 390X was designed as the highest end card for the highest resolutions. The 480 is a mid-end card for low- and mid-resolutions. this card is too slow for 4K and isn't going to be great for 1440P, its aimed at the 1080P user. AMD have pointed out this on some of their marketing material, e.g. number of users with 1080P or less monitors, % users pay less than $350 a card etc.

For 1080 I don;t think it needs more than 32 ROPS at those clocks.

Wait, no Haribo?

Won't somebody think of the children! :D

I'm onto a theory about the Haribo... when I ordered my SSD, I got the regular single complimentary Haribo. Later on I realised I forgot to order a couple of other things (TIM remover and air can), so I ordered those the next day. I got 2 Haribo instead of the usual one with that delivery. For a total of 3 Haribo.

Now the 2nd delivery had 2 and the first delivery had 1. 1x1+2x2=5 Haribo ends in an o, so add that onto the end to get 50. There were 3 packs of Haribo in total over 2 deliveries, 3/2= 1.5. Multiply that by 50...

Confirmed! 75 Packs of Haribo per RX480 you order from Overclockers! I've solved it! The biggest, most important mystery of all!

Also that 'leak' of apparent 480 benchmarks, where it does worse than a 970 are unreliable and probably just made up to gain attention. That or AMD have failed, which I doubt considering Raja's claims and aims with this card.

I keep being ignored on that - as I've pointed out several times how this has reminded me of the 4870 and 5000 series launch; AMD gotten smart and gone back to that; the amount of misinformation AMD had on those launches was legendary and amazing. This is almost a mirror of what they did back then and look what dropped - they are saying this is similar.....things are going to get very interesting.....

That sounds cool and it certainly does ring a bell considering the Hitman 60fps 1440p benchmark at Capsaicin and Doom 1440p benchmark at a later event... but I'll keep my expectations low. 970/390 performance at current 380 prices. Any less performance... failure. If it's at least that, then I'll buy one later this year for reasons I've posted a million times (not for myself).
On the day launch price ^^^^^

480 4GB Reference.
$200 = £135 Wholesale, add Retail profit £25? = £160 + 20 VAT = £192.

480 8GB Reference.
$230 = £155 Wholesale add Retail profit £25? = £180 + 20% VAT = £216

480 AIB.
<$300, lets for arguments sake say $270.
£182 Wholesale, add Retail profit £25? = £207 + 20% VAT = £248 (£20 cheaper than 390 launch price)

The 390 8GB has been around £240 for the whole year.

Which is why these £200+ estimates of prices people are coining are nonsense. The card would be obsolete, or at least not offer anything good price-to-performance. Even if it's as good as a 980 like some folks suggest. Especialy since 980s currently go for under £300 and who knows how big a bargain one will be able to find 390X for when this is released.

I take it that the 1000 cards in stock are already paid for or at least have an agreed cost? If so Brexit, if it happens shouldn't affect the price of the first batch of cards because of currency fluctuations.

Because they obviously cant stop leaks. They've shown that they've got very little ability to control leakages given everything we've seen so far. So in that situation, you dont deny everybody the proper drivers and have everybody leak out disappointing information, you take control of the leaks by at least dripping out reasons for people to get excited.

Why should that be the case? While you, and many others including me, would like to see that information, that isn't a compelling reason for AMD to add their latest polaris code to pre-release drivers serving their historic lineup.
Neither is the idea of getting ppl excited. In a scenario where ppl not under NDA leak somewhat accurate information how can we differentiate between actual figures vs the nonsense floating about web until it is verfified by reviews on launch. It isn't useful, and certainly isn't being in control.

I am not supporting the argument for purposefully concealing performance with the above btw.

It's useful in that it would prevent lots of verifiable negative results being leaked. It'd be one thing if people couldn't provide reasonable proof of their claims, but with the cards actually out there, this is possible now.

Maybe it wouldn't be 'being in control', but it would be making the best of a situation.

GTAV - 970OC (on i7) vs RX480 (on i5)

Though that is a fairly heavily clocked 970, it's still pointing to the same thing - the 480 well behind the 970. Meaning something is not right, whatever the case. Wouldn't say 'fake', but this may well be a case where a person not using a proper driver is getting subpar results.
