Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

it wouldn't really make sense at this point to buy a 390/X/970/980, with the 480 out, even if similar price, let alone if its a bit cheaper, if not for efficiency and features for AMD counterpart, or memory for nvidia counterpart.
i could see ppl reluctant to sidegrade if they have them, but an upgrade from lower, the 480 would still be a no brainer.

Don't you know efficiency is irrelevant now? It was only relevant on Hawaii launch ;)

380 launched at $199, so yes.

So your not bothered that an AIB 970 has been the same price for a year as AIB 480's will be now, despite the fact that its looking increasingly like its not even as fast as that in reality?

All your interested in is what an older card was priced at two years ago.

So for you AMD are in competition only with their own cards of old.

You will be buying one then?

Not really, it's just the stupid 'Ultra', 'Epic' and other stupid presets that throw a lot of crap in and hinder performance but don't actually make any noticable to eye difference from 'High' which runs at least 2x quicker in most cases. I've seen a few vids comparing settings and I swear I thought that 'High' setting looked better than most 'Ultra' ones.

It's just stupid marketing gimmick which makes people think that they need to spend £600 on GPU (nvidia probably had some input in it). There is no reason why we need 7 setting presets instead of the old good Low / Med / High / Custom (if you wanted to crank in extra AA).

Very true

So given it's about as fast as a 970...

£207.99 with cashback. No brainer?

Not 8GB (obviously) but is that a problem?
Not a major problem, but there will be games where you will have to not use the better/best texture settings available.

I still think a 480 is a better bet, though. Has more room for improvement through drivers and will also have the benefit in most DX12 situations.

if you wanna trade a brand new finfet architecture with 28nm one that it's production stoped that have impact on driver and support life span, get half memory, lose on efficiency, have worst DX12 gaming experience, lose in DP1.3/1.4, HDR, and probably some other new features, then yea no brainer...
ppl are unbelievable!
oh and yea still slower even it's only 10%, that is still slower...

there are no 480 AIB'S out,so you cant compare yet can you?

lets wait until we have them before comparing an imaginary card.

I have a 960 at the moment so its going to be a decent upgrade, which would I choose even if they were the same speed..480 no brainer.

Yes nice card although lets compare that to the best AIB RX480 due in July for better comparison and bringing the additional 4GB ram, Display Port 1.3 and free-sync over HDMI 2.0b that are features for the future or may suit some buyers interests.

When more games start using above 4GB then the secondary value of cards like 970 will drop.
