Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Exactly this, i think the driving force of the reference 480s was to hit the price point before all else, this is why they have such rubbish coolers on them, which quite frankly is not up to the job, it seems they skimped on these reference cards just to hit a price point.

Bring on the AIB cooled and clocked versions to see a real true representation of what Polaris will do.

In order for the card to be a success with the 3rd party coolers though, the price still has to be right. imo, 220 - 240 is pushing it at the moment, if we see higher prices than that then the card starts to stray towards 980 territory.

Yep thanks to Brexit :( very little we can do there, other than wait it out or bite the bullet. Sad times really :(

The pound is somehow going up again. At 1.35 now (vs $), was 1.33 last time I looked - only a couple days ago.

We were at 1.4:1 before the referendum. The 1.5:1 was a very, very temporary spike just before the referendum result, so can be ignored.

295x2 also exceeded the pcie spec as did the 6990 in one of its modes. Didn't seem to make much difference to those cards. And i don't recall any complaints of motherboards failing.

There aren't many 980s left on the market so that won't be a problem when the cards come to market although I do agree that the custom 8GB cards have to be under £240 to represent good value. Ideally, I'd get a custom 4gb card for 199. This comes from someone who was going to buy a 960 for 150£

"So can be ignored" What? If we had voted to remain all forecasts said we would have been over 1.55 and pushing 1.6 by now ( ie back to or close to where we were before this EU referendum risk came in to play).

It can't be ignored as that was the start of the recovery after an assumption the day before that remain would win. The risk of the brexit had been priced in for months before that.

It's been wavering between 1.31 and 1.35 for a few days now, with no trend towards recovery at all.

And as Jono said, we could have been well above 1.4 right now had we remained.

Ordered a RX 480... just so i can do this..............

:D

block will be free but will take some time along with the mod- depends if i can to include VRMs or leave on stock mid plate.
Got the price very low and is a one off- so dont mind ****ing the thing up.

Indeed, pre-referendum rates were already significantly depressed.

Any hints on dates for 3rd party version of the 480 yet? I saw the pics of MSI & ASUS ones but not a date (unless I just missed it, kinda skim-read)

I heard mid July... I also read someone say they were expecting one in over the next couple of days to review it..

I would imagine over the next week or so they will prob go out to reviewers etc. Im interested to see what Powercolor have up their sleeve, if they have some AIO cooled monster in the wings, failing that a Tri-X or Vapor-X Sapphire would be nice.

That's an excellent deal if you were going for the 8GB 480. 390X any day of the week. The free copy of warhammer is pretty awesome too.

Will the 390X do everything the 480 can do in terms of DX12 and Vulkan? What exactly does the 480 have over the 390X? My max price for a new graphics card is £250...so I either stay with 480, swap for a 390X or wait until the AIB 480's or 1060 comes out...Hmmm

The 390X will do more than the 480. The only advantage the 480 has is lower power consumption (marginally) and the potential for better thermals (held back by the reference board).

The 390X is simply in the next performance bracket.
