Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Cheers, that was really helpful!

On a side note, I'd always wondered what you looked like :D

I looked like crap in that vid lol and that was finished at around 2am in the morning :D

An early preview though and hopefully it goes back in tomorrow with the new drivers and I can give it some decent testing or find out if mine is a faulty card :)

What the hell you on about? I don't even know where to start with your condescending post. Where the hell did I say it was crap? Even on my review I was still positive, even though I was proper stressed and worn out. You have absolutely no idea about me or what is what, so I would appreciate less of your guff. Sure it might be faulty or it might be something else and I am waiting for drivers but get off that high horse fella and chill out.

M posts aren't condescending. It's hard to get tone right in a forum post, but, they really are disbelief and confusion. You are a well respected person around these forums and are now getting trying to get into reviewing hardware. You tried the card and it kept crashing in games. That's not happening to anyone else. And I have seen you time and time again advise people to RMA their cards.

The drivers from AMD might not be out today or tomorrow, they only stated that they would give an update today. Still haven't heard any word from them yet. If, and this is a big if, the updated drivers do solve your problem, then, you should still RMA the card as it's definitely faulty as AMD stated that only some of the RX 480's suffered this problem. And if you look around the forums most people are having no issues. Kaap is running his with no trouble. Hardocp have 2 running in crossfire, constantly, since Saturday with no issues.

That's why I would return the card. It's not running properly and it should work straight out of the box. You would have had a replacement by the time AMD come out with a "fix"

And I apologise for my last post, maybe it was a little strong. I thought you misquoted me, because there was supposed to be a smiley face after the word drama in my first post.

But, I never lie. I don't make up stuff to prove an argument and admit when I am wrong. But you did call the card crap.

Looking at some of the reviews, the 480 is crap.

And I still can't understand how you bought a reference card after reading those reviews. Or why you acted like you didn't know the reference cooler was bad when I asked you. Reference coolers are bad in most cards and as a hardware enthusiast you surely know that.

So again sorry for the missing ":)" that made the posts following mine a bit more angry than they should have been.

Yes in a power/temperature limited case an undervolt and overclock makes sense.

My 4870HQ runs at 3.4Ghz stock on all 4 cores. I set it to 3.6ghz and take off 85mv of voltage meaning it runs cooler and faster than stock with higher power limits just in case.

Is it time to start up the hype for the next AMD card :)

Look at the last item on that list...

I'm confused at what the 490 can be at this point. AMD have already gone on record saying that the 480 uses the fully unlocked Polaris GPU, so there are no extra CU's hiding for the 490.

So unless it's just a cherry picked 480 with higher clocks, better cooler, and none of the perf/W limitations? But if that's the case whats the difference between a 3rd party custom 480 and a 490...

Only other option is small Vega, with the rumoured Oct release date. But Raja's tweet about Vega being a long way away yet... hmmm

To be honest nobody knows, 490 was also listed on an official AMD site on a promo due to end Dec 31st.... right now all we know is its called a 490 and its going to have 8GB of GDDR5 ram, that may even be GDDR5X, or just standard GDDR5..

We do not know if its Polaris, or Vega or anything else...

My guess is it will be placed between the 1070 and 1080 in performance and priced accordingly.

small Vega seems the most likely candidate.
and priced accordingly.

Doubt it, the dual card just came out I don't see another for at least 1 year. Also needs too be room for Vega too slot in later this year/start off next year.

Very much doubt AMD would make a dual GPU of their low-mid tier card, they have never done this previously, its always been their higher end stuff....

This is going to be replacing the 290/390 series i reckon...
