Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I always thought that the implementation and pushing of dx12 on AotS was a masterstroke in marketing.

To this day I still don't know much about the actual game. Only "planetary warfare on a massive scale".

Absolutely. It's catapulted them into being one of the most frequently referenced games there is. They're in every benchmark set, every GPU review.

But they're a small-ish independent studio with some enthusiastic programmers. I don't think it's just a PR-exercise for them. DX12 is a big thing right now with all the main players getting into it. AotS is just the start of DX12 support being a common game "feature", I think. That's why whilst I'm sympathetic to those complaining about it being used as the Go To comparison for AMD vs Nvidia (because they are right that it is exceptional amongst current games), I still think it is fair to show it because I think it genuinely shows what we can expect from games over the coming year or so. If you buy a GPU today, you're doing so largly based on how it will perform in games from here on, not on older games (assuming it can handle them adequately).

Not for most people. For most people the argument is going to be "does a 480 meet my needs" and outside of enthusiast forums like this the answer is going to be a resounding "yes". A single card solution will have an edge over a mGPU solution for the foreseeable future so the limited market segment that wants the very high-end (and is willing to pay for it) is still going to tend towards the 1080 until Vega appears. As they should. But it's a sideshow. Fury level performance for <£200 is plenty for the huge majority of people. It's going to fly off the shelves and people trying to cast "the argument" as 480 vs. 1080 are, imo, primarily either missing the point or trying to subtly push Nvidia. Yes, you probably will get comparable results with 2x480 vs. 1080 in a limited range of scenarios which increase as time go on. But as I keep saying on these forums, the argument is not 480 vs. 1080. It's £200 of AMD card vs. £200 of Nvidia card at which point I think Nvidia's only defence is to pull every PR and marketing trick they can find.

Sorry to use your post as a leaping off point for that, Ferrari - I know you were only quoting an article. But people comparing 480 with 1080 as if there isn't a £400 gap between the two is a pet peeve of mine.

+1

You must be incredibly peeved at AMD then as that is the only comparison they have shown us so far :p

...and in the same post you have a stab at Nvidia's PR when it is AMD's own PR that is comparing the two. Astonishing.

Please excuse my ignorance, I haven't gone through the whole thread, but are there any actual benchmarks / reviews out yet and is there a release / pre order date? I'm really keen on checking this card out but I'm a little in the dark about when we'll find out some actual facts :)

Why do Nvidians get so upset when someone posts an AoTS benchmark?

AoTS is the only DX12 game that supports Explicit multi adapter hence why I posted that link. DX12 mgpu added to frostbite and other engines would make it easier to implement in future games.

Now that the new Pascal cards perform better in DX12, I am guessing we will see less and less upset amongst the Nvidia populace over AOTS benches.

because its a benchmark used to favour them.

pick a mainstream game we all actually play.then show the benchmarks then we impressed ;)

nvidia or amd do make these basically tech demos to show off. its not a game really just a advertising tool.

Actually no, it really is a game and I have played it. :p

It's used because it's the only game that supports Explicit multiGpu and Async Compute from the ground up and there are no other mainstream games that use it to this degree yet. I hope that will change in the next 6- 24 months and we see a big push for DX12, Async Compute and Vulkan in all mainstream and AAA titles.

I am hoping that the Vulkan patch for Doom comes out soon and the results are favourable, because if one well known AAA game does it, the others will soon follow.
:)

Yep, Hopefully the 1080 offers at least satisfactory level of ASYNC compute to warrant every developer jumping on board right now.

AOTS June update will no doubt utilize both the 480 and 1080's new features and give us a great understanding of which way we are heading with DX12.

Nooe, nada.29th at the latest but reviews 1 we before would be nice.

Well Nvidia don't have any comparable cards for them to show it against. There was no other card they could pick. If AMD had shown it against a 980 everyone would just attack them for comparing against the previous generation. The comments practically write themselves... 'afraid to compare with the current tech...', 'AMD's new generation is less powerful than Nvidia's last...' and so forth.

When Nvidia actually release a 480 competitor, then proper comparisons can begin.

found the pcgaming show thing now after a quick google. says they are presenting it with pcgamer,
AMD presents the PC Gaming Show powered by PC Gamer
The live 90-minute show will feature guests from across the PC gaming industry for a one-of-a-kind event at E3

and

the PC Gaming Show will return for a unique presentation of some of the most exciting PC games and technology during E3. And for the first time, we’re opening the doors to PC gaming enthusiasts to be a part of the only PC dedicated event of E3.

so not a stand alone amd event by any means. hopefully we'l see some proper benchmarks rather than just videos and talks.

i never said anyone did, just thought amd may try and go all out if they where doing something at e3 to get pre orders and show us how good this card is rather than waving ashes about as the be all and end all.

just sitting waiting to replace this long in the tooth gtx670 with something newer, be that a 1080 or a pair of 480's who knows. but not being able to plan is damned annoying.
