RAF Low level flying.... [56k unfriendly!]

Very nice photo's of a subject that is definatley different!

would love to go just to watch something like this :)

How do you know when to go or is it just luck?

Really liking them, especially the third, fourth and last ones. I think the composition on most of them is pretty good considering how fast they move, there isn't really much I would improve.

A bit of both, you choose a likely area and hope to get some traffic. You can have days where you get nothing.

no 6 is amazing, loving that shot.

do you have any of the typhoon?

I've only had one pass by a Typhoon to date and he was too high (about 100ft above me). They aren't that common low level as the first active squadrons were tasked with air to air so there wasn't much call for going low level. There is now a Typhoon squadron that is tasked with air to ground so hopefully they will start to be more common.

I've just noticed I missed one off (maybe my favourite shot as well!)....

If you're heading that way again soon, there may be some more interesting Yank stuff around.

The old Warthogs are back! :D

A-10's are back at Lakenheath. Up to 24 of them from Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany are over here while their runway is being resurfaced.

Should be around for at least month. They are apparently booked in on the east coast ranges for some life firing too. :D

I've been following the info on the A10s very carefully. I would love to get one at low level, got a little over a month to make it happen!

Some top notch shots. I'd love to see some A-10s as they are my favourite plane. I really like the shots of the hawk with the farm in the background!

So just to confirm - are you using any photography passes or anything? Or is it just you on top of a hill taking shots of the RAF? Hell the way the country is going I'm suprised you've not been taken on one of the CIAs "special" flights!

I think that 14 arrived today.

Shame I no longer live under the Lakenheath flightpath. :(

I miss having the A10's hedgehopping and following us down the backlanes as target practice.

Got several photo's back on 35mm of A10's up in their wingtips using the village church as a turning point. Well, not just A10's.

Nice to have them back though. :D

The area is National Park so no need for any kind of passes but to get to a position to either be level or higher than them a lot of the time you need to cross private / farm land and you rely on their permission to do this. Generally most are fine as long as you respect their land, animals, close gates etc.

The UK is actually a very good place to do take pictures of military aviation. There are a lot of countries where just writing down the serial number of a plane will land you in jail for spying!

The CIA planes are a hot topic in the aviation community at the moment, some of the info in the papers have been sourced from aviation forums, and people are debating if photos of such flights such be posted on the net.

12 arrived as two 4 ships and one 2 ship. Another 2 ship came via the photo call at RAF Northolt.

I'm not sure if any more are due but if they are it will be Thursday.

I like these, I can appreciate how hard it can be to capture these things so tightly cropped. I went to last years Farnborough Airshow and I was very disapointed with the results for the vast majority, I put it down to the lens and weather, my old Sigma just wasnt able to keep steady in the darkened weather.

All of these were taken on days with a lot of sun, I've got plenty that don't look as good from days where the weather hasn't been as good. :p

Yea, I thought it would be. I guess the whole CIA thing must be pretty big full stop. Mind you the comment was tongue in cheek!

Lovely shots though - its a shame the RAF don't do any of that close to me, from what I've read its mostly near Snowdon in Wales :(. I'll have to arrange another trip to London and the RAF museum!
