Raid 0 and disk failures: realistic?

Are worries of disk failures trashing a RAID 0 array unrealistic? Are drives from reputable manufacturers good enough today that one doesn't really need to worry about it?

Input welcomed :)

Remember, it'll never happen to you. ;)

I'm running 2x250Gb 7200.10s in RAID 0. I plan to get a 500Gb 7200.10 and have a monthly Disk image backed up to it from the RAID array.

Whatever the risk of individual disk failure, if you have two disks in an array you double the risk.

The risk nowadays must be quite low, in the short to medium term, but will always be there so it depends how important your data and perhaps your time are to you.

Back your data up or use Imaging software ie Acronis Trueimage to back everything up.

Thanks guys. Ok, hoping to change the topic here - I am looking at the Asus PK5 motherboard. Am I going to need a RAID controller or can I use the motherboard utility? Would I be missing out on much?

If your data is that important you wouldn't (or shouldn't anyway) entrust it to a single drive (regardles of RAID 0 or single disc) anyway.

You can use the onboard RAID controller.
