RAID 0 External eSATA drives (IcyBox)?

My hard drive setup:
250GB x2 RAID0: OS, nothing important
500GB Int.: Storage - everything important
500GB Ext.: Backup above

The external is an eSATA enclosure.

I can see my 500GB storage drive running out of space fairly soon, so I want to look at buying a TB drive for storage.

If I was to buy a 1TB drive for storage I'd want to buy a 1TB to basically mirror that (backup).

Rather than buying two 1TB drives could I just buy one, stick my current 500GB storage in an enclosure and RAID it with my 500GB backup drive?

Basically, what I'm asking is: Is eSATA RAID 0 possible?

it is possible, but i really wouldn't recommend it mate..

much better off using robocopy (run say every 3 hours) to copy from internal disc to external (don't run it on OS files, just run it on user files etc) -don't raid them..

I think you mean RAID 1 rather than RAID 0, yes?
It's no different to putting disks installed internally in a RAID array.

Nope, I mean RAID 0

Basically I want to buy a 1TB disk for storage to replace my current 500GB storage drive, this will then need to be backed up. So, rather than buying another 1TB disk for that I could RAID 0 my 2 current 500GB drives to make a 1TB drive.

With my set up I need two disks of the same size - one storage, one to backup storage. I don't backup my C:\ drive

I'm not looking to RAID0 2 external 500GB drives for speed or anything else, I simply want to make a 1TB backup drive out of them. Rather than buying 2 1TB drives and then having 2 spare 500GB drives I could buy 1 1TB drive and use my current 2 500GB drives in RAID 0 for backup.

Meh I dunno, maybe I should just sell my 2 500GB drives off.

using raid0 as a backup is not something i'd do.. (if one dies, all data goes)

don't mean to offend you mate, but this has bad idea written all over it

True.

Thing is, it will literally hold an Acronis backup of my storage drive on it so it doesn't really matter if it dies.

Might just sell my 2 500GBs off and keep it simple.

what's on the storage drive?

probably far easier/better to run robocopy (after the first run, it'll only copy update & new files -saving tons of time), and you won't need any special software to open them

All my important stuff is on the storage drive. Downloads, films, music, documents etc.

It probably would be best to run RoboCopy to perform the backup, but it's not the way the backup is performed that I'm wanting to change. Basically I want to upgrade my 500GB storage drive to 1TB meaning I will also need a 1TB backup drive.

what i'd do is say if the files are 400gb, use robocopy to do them onto 1x500gb drive, and all other files onto the other 500gb drive
