RAID 1 and options

Hello,

I am thinking about switching to RAID 1. So far it seems that that according to researches, read performance will be on par with RAID 0's performance, but the write performance will be almost twice slower in comparison to no RAID.
Can anyone please confirm this?

I wont use hardware RAID, only onboard chip(AHCI 10).

Also what kind of of benefits/disadvantages does Windows software RAID has in comparison to hardware RAID(this is Windows based system)?
For example will I loose my RAID data in case of electricity outage(as dedicated hardware raids have battery backups)?

Write performance will be near identical to a single drive but read should be twice as good.
Im going with RAID 10 on my next rig.

Thats the most common opinion and I guess that its true.

Now I am trying to decide which way to go - hardware(onboard controller) or windows software version?

Personally, I'd go onboard controller out of the 2.

Speed wise they will both be pretty much on par with each other, it's just that if you setup the RAID in Windows it can get a little messy whereas an onboard controller presents a single (if you setup just one) disk to Windows.

Ok, but what if I go onboard controller and then some day decide to upgrade my motherboard? May I then simply move my array(both HDDs) to new drive and "plug and play" it?
