I've been searching for a while but keep getting confused between responses and similar situations that are 2/3years out of date. So if someone would be kind enough to shed some light on this...

My setup is in my sig, but inaddition to this i have a 500gb hitachi drive with all data. I would like to put another drive in which acts as an exact copy of this, following a series of scares from HDDs failings around my household. I dont want to loose my data, and have a spare drive.

I figured RAID-1 was the choice, but am unsure if i can set this up without reinstalling windows/or copy data etc. Can i just plug the new blank hdd in and have it copy all the data from the hitachi to it, and continually update the copy as i make any changes...

Sorry for such a convoluted post, i hope it makes some sense. Thanks in advance for your replies. :)

If you want a proper back up then that isn't RAID 1.

If your PC was stolen, destroyed in a fire, suffered a major hardware failure etc. where's your back up? It's gone with the rest of your PC.

Use your spare drive externally to back up your data and then keep it somewhere safe away from the PC.

My external drive has failed on me, but it did act as a copy and kept away from my pc. However, now im left with just the drive in my pc. It will be replaced under warranty. But in the mean time i would like to have a copy in the pc just in case the drive fails. Like i said, there is no investment here for me as i already have the spare drive. I suppose i could sell it and invest in some subscription online storage. Eg. Live Drive. But I might as well stick it in and get the online storage when i can afford it properly.
