RAID 1 with existing data

Is there any way at all to implement RAID 1 on two drives, where one of the drives has existing data (that you want to keep) and one is blank?

I have a 6Tb in a NAS, and would love to add another at some point, but the idea of buying a third, just to hold a copy of the data temporarily, just seems wrong to me. And expensive!

to be honest I don't know too much about raid setups but I know when I put my 2 x evos in raid they where both fully formatted regardless of data being on there and re setup as a raid.

if your able too I would backup the data before doing this or find else where to store the data temporarily as I think that they both need to be formatted a certain way for the raid system to work.
