RAID card that can 'grow' the array

Thanks very much for the informative post Zarf! It just seems like there is no perfect solution, no matter how much you spend.

The DroboPro will do everything but it's as slow as molasses for the price. This Lime Tech server looks amazing though:

Think I'm more confused than ever now :/ A new PC case with 8 x 2TB drives and a Highpoint RAID card might just be the best solution for now and worry about how to grow it in the future.

That 16Tb, what on earth do you use that much for? (- parity etc)

Probably easier in the future to get another card + drives tbh. Especially if you can go 3/4Tb drives and migrate it across.

Personally, I will just keep adding and removing drives to my WHS. Yes, I am paying for convenience :D.
I did have a similar looking case to that lime server! I had 2x5bay and 1x3bay icydocks. I got rid for a rackmount server to fit in my rackmount box.

Since everything started coming out in 720p, I archive around 30GB a week on average. I also keep quite a few system images on there.

I'm not sure if we'll see consumer SATA drives over 2TB for a very long time due to the hassle they'll receive from people who don't know about the 2TB partition limit of MBR, the drives have to be converted to GPT if you want all the space in a single partition, which can't be booted from on 99% of computers. This is a BIOS limitation and not going away anytime soon.
This means that if we see any at all they'll be targeted at enterprise users and thus cost a fortune and/or have SAS connectors.

My server is running in an Antec 900, with 8 hotswap bay blocks.

Pics taken back when I only had 4 drives, almost exactly 3 years ago!
