raid help 4 a noob

If you have a search back through the forum I've written a few such guides although the exact details will depend on your motherboard - check the manual, it should have most of it.

You will need to reinstall the OS though.
 
You can get around reinstalling the OS, just make sure you have the raid drivers installed before you do anything, and then clone the drive over - I did it with a Bootable BartsPE bootdisk containing Norton Ghost.
 
if its vista, chance's are you don't need to install any drives at all, load the raid bios, set the two drives to raid 0,reboot, then install. done
 
Right what would be best for me i want games to load faster should i raid the whole system or just put my games on the second raptor on there own what would be faster
 
Raiding the whole system in RAID0. The only downside is that if one drive fails, you lose all the data on both.
 
Just as a word of warning, I recently had a raid0 with two 150gb raptors and one of them just died randomly - and I lost all the data.

Luckily it was more of a gaming machine and I had all my data backed up - but if you don't have it backed up, you look a bit silly.

I would honestly just stick to having the os on one and games on the other - it's easier, doesn't require as much caution (although it's always clever to backup no matter what your situation) and you'll still have very nice speeds.
 
You should always do back ups anyway, to CD/DVD's or off-line hard drive, no mater what raid level you use, 1,10,5,0 or even JBOB.

I have 2 raptors RAIDed in 0, a 500GB harddrive which i back up every other day onto another 500GB haddrive. nothing is important on my riad 0, its OS and programs.

even storing OS on one drive on the other is not safe
 
tbh i'd just raid0 them and backup anything important

if you're running games on one drive and os on the other, if one the os drive fails, you'll have to reinstall most games anyway (besides steam games) for the registry entries

might as well go with raid 0 for performance, it's a noticeable boost :D
