Hey,

I'm running 2 drives in RAID-0 on my DFI NF4 Ultra-D, which are connected to ports 1 and 2. However with the new video card I am planning to get, I will need to move the drives onto ports 1+3 or 2+4 and use right-angled SATA connectors. However, when I move either drive onto a different port I get a RAID error at boot, and the volume is not recognised.

Is there any way to move the drives physically without destroying the array (I want to avoid a reformat!!)? Any help appreciated :)

Cheers,

Suman

Don't quote me on this but I think some boards only have RAID on certain ports. Now if you board falls into that category then it may be that your board only supports RAID configurations on sata port 1 and 2. Check that out for yourself.

Why will you need to move it? Is is the size of your graphics card?

The last question depends on your RAID options. Sometimes you get the chance to import a foreign configuration which means that as soon as you put your drives to ports 1 and 3 (should your board support this) the RAID automatically asks or you could look to import the foreign settings. NEVER EVER INITIALISE unless you don't mind losing the data.

Let us know how you get on :)

NForce 4 should support RAID on any port so there shouldn't be any problem with running an array on ports 1 & 3. As above it should be possible to move a drive to a different port and cajole the array into still working.

It would be wise to invest in a copy of Acronis True Image though. That way if it all does go pear shaped you'll have a full drive image to recover from.

Hey,

Thanks for the replies. With something like True Image, would it be possible to clone the drive onto a third (non-RAID) SATA drive, then rebuild the array on different ports (if needed), then copy the image back to the new array?

Also I heard Norton Ghost was the gold standard for that kinda thing, or is True Image better?

90% the NF4 can assign each sata port as raid or normal sata, look in the bios, might just have to set the port as RAID

Ahh ok bledd. I think I remember now, will give it a go cheers! Just taken some pics of the RAID BIOS when the array is working (ports 1+2):

And here is what happens when I move one of the drives:

As you can see the only relevant option is "Clear Disk" which doesn't sound particularly friendly to me :p:D

You legend! That solved it :D what a simple fix! Just RAID-enabled ports 3+4 in the normal BIOS, swapped one drive over and it all auto detects in the RAID BIOS.

Thanks dude!
