RAID or SSD!?

yeah but then i need more drives and a raid controller cos mobo one just aint up for that lol. I need a pay increase :(

Mobo controller is crap anyway. With the same HDDs in RAID0 you will have 50% performance gain on the external RAID controller compared to mobo one. Even if you do not plan to go for more exotic RAIDs I would still advise spending 50 quid and getting a controller.

I read before cheaper controllers still relay on the cpu to do calculations etc for them while the more expensive oens sort it out themselves?

personally, what i would do is combine the best of both worlds. Scrap raiding mechanical drives and using them as an OS drive because it has been said (and i can believe it) that multiple raided raptors will not provide the same speeds as a good SSD drive, and certainly not the same access times.

I've seen SSD's get a 0.7ms access time, in some cases 0.1ms up against a Samsung F1 320GB drive, with hardly anything on it, get 13ms access time.

The trouble is that a good SLC SSD can run you up £350-£400+ (32GB roughly) and no manufacturer exceedes 256GB from what i've seen at the minute, but for £50 i think that you're choices are severely limited (practically to crucial SSD's which, to be honest, suck something terrible...)

What i would do is raid several fast, cheap, small SSD's together (say 3 30GB Vertex or 64GB Samsung) and use a single, seperate ,large, dual partitioned hard drive (such as a samsung F1 1TB or Western Digital caviar Black) as a games/everything else/downloads drive.
