Guys,

I am about to do a raid 0 with 2 x 150gb Raptors for speed and performance but my question is this.

Currently using 1 raptor i either clone my disk or do an image for backup purposes using acronis image software, but if I setup a raid 0 with 2 disks how would i go about backing it up?

So for example i now have a 300gb disk (2x150gb raid 0) do i just do an image as if it was a standard 300gb hard drive or can i also simply clone the newly raid 300gb to a normal 300gb sata hard drive?

As I really want to go to raid for performance but also make sure i can backup the disk as well and have not the room or capacity to use raid 5 and dont want to use raid 1 as there is no performance gain.

You can continue to clone the array because it appears to the OS as a single disk. When it comes to restoring the process is also fairly simple when going back to a RAID array, in theory it should restore fine to a single disk as well although you might have issues with SATA controller drivers depending on how things are configured.

I assume you're planning on doing a fresh install onto the RAID0 array? You will struggle to get a clone of the existing disk working on an array due to driver issues.

I use Acronis to clone a single IDE HDD to a SATA RAID0 array so it is possible but that was when I went to two new drives, if you make a RAID array with an excisting drive it gets a bit more complicated.

@Franco_cov, do you have the backup on a separate harddisk?

yes i do have a backup on a seperate disk as i cloned my current 150gb disk to a another 300gb disk the only difference is that the partitions were resized as the other disk had more space. But in the past thats not a problem as when i clone the 300gb disk back to my 150gb it simply adjusts the partitions back again.

So your saying that if i have 2 disks in raid the os sees it as 1 disk therefore i just clone it to another disk as long as its big enough? and when i come to restore from it again do i simply restore from my image to 2x disks or do i have to re-setup the raid then do the restore ?

The RAID setup is done from a special program that loads before Windows during boot or with a bootable CD/USB

First you need to setup the RAID array and then you back up/restore.
