raid setup for performance or sata 3gbs?

as per title wich will be better a single sata 3gbs drive or a raid setup that offers performance? in ide aswell.
 
You need to define "performance" a bit better. For example a single Raptor will have a far better seek time than a RAID0 array of 7200rpm drives whereas it's likely the array will return a better sustained transfer rate if the drives are half decent.

Just because a SATA drive is rated at 3Gbps doesn't mean you'll get that sort of performance from it. In fact you won't get anywhere close, 3Gbps is the signalling rate of the interface which, once the protocol overheads are taken into account, gives a data rate of 300MB/s but even the latest drives struggle to shift 90MB/s in sustained transfers. So much so that there is no performance difference whatsoever between identical drives running on SATA300, SATA150 or ATA133 interfaces.
