Rail Simulator

I really do hate EA. Now I'm filling in ruddy feedback forms asking for help. No doubt I'll have to wait till next week for a response - would have been quicker getting the boxed copy!

hmm im yet to actually find the point of this, i admit, i like the concept of a train sim, but with that said, its highly tedious, it runs like a dog, and for the life of me can never switch tracks...so that makes it slightly difficult, i think over the weekend ill be messing with it some more, see if i can make sense of it all

Oh, and i can derail the trains a bit too easy.

Whats so good about a rail simulator? I dont really understand why some are so obseessed about microsoft flight sim either.

Whats so good about them? Though id rather fly then drive a train on a track where i can only decide if i accelerate or break.

How comes you guys like them so much?

Why do you like your favourite food or films? You could reel off a bunch of things you personally enjoy about them but it's hardly going to convince someone else to start enjoying them.

Each to their own.

Purists argue that Flight Simulator is not a game - in fact it's a genuinely educational tool that would appeal to people who perhaps don't have to funds to take real flying lessons. After all how many aspiring pilots actually end up flying an A320 or similar for real? Flight sims require real effort on behalf of the player (e.g. learning about instrumentation and the various protocols involved in flying). I've recently picked up a 700 page book on Flight Simulator X which will take some time to get through ;-)
Unfortunately most other games on the market today do not require the same learning effort to master and so appeal to a different audience. Having said that I enjoy shooters and RTS titles as well. Like the previous poster said, each to their own.

Grrr. Spent ages bored to tears approaching Paddington, before finally getting within half a mile and derailing on a set of points which were not correctly set.

Since when has it been the responsbility of a passenger train driver to set points on a mainline route?

The signalling is seriously messed up and it looks like EA RS is an even more half finished effort than some other recent non transport games.

Some people are even reporting trains colliding in one of the scenarios outside Paddington - not good in view of RW events there a few years back. Without going into technical details the signalling system is all wrong.

I was one of those looking forward to the release but so far not living up to the promise at all.

Someone asked what the attraction of a train sim is - well the expandability and creativity that is opened up whether building a route, 3D models or simply scripting an activity. Unfortunately most of the serious development tools weren't included in the retail version and apparently will have to be downloaded separately when the publisher decides to make them available.

Well I've asked EA for a refund because 3 days later and I still can't download it. Useless! Still think I'll buy it, but might wait till they've sorted out a few of the issues with the game.

I purchased it "for a friend". Said "friend" was then bemused as his long coal-hauling task was aborted by the programme bemoaning the fact that the train had veered off route.

As someone else has said above - since when did the driver set points on mainlines?

In depots, perhaps? But on a mainline?

Hmmm.

any updates on this, how are people finding it after a few days play?
I'm tempted by it but if there are lots of bugs I might go for Trainz Railroad Sim 2006.

Well I've got the boxed version now. Must say, I'm not really very impressed with it as things stand. It runs like a dog (has some major stuttering issues!), it took me editing all the config files manually to get a 1680x1050 resolution, and there's really very little content in the game other than the actual routes. I'd hold off on buying it right now.

I'll be holding out to see if/what any patch might bring and as said above the Dev. Tools. There's a few hardy souls putting a brave face on things over at UKTS but if there's no significant improvement by the New Year, my copy will be taking a swim in the 'bay.

FWIW I've posted a review at my site:
