Ramadan Mubarak

I remember doing it when I spent some time out in the middle east just to "give it a go". Fortunately it was during the winter months so the days were short and hence the fast was bareable. It is quite a challenge, and an really rather satisfying achieving it - it's a good test of your faith too, but leaving religion aside, it's a great test of discipline which I'm sure most of the people in the UK would fail.

Ramadan Mubarak to all our fellow Muslims on OcUK

Thats what I don't understand, putting you job and safety before a religion?

Is it about temptation? as Lent is about giving up something, Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.

Where's the safety issue? People have been doing it for centuries. Why are you talking about Jesus when we're dealing with Islam?! :p

No, he's posted quite a few times about going out and getting very drunk and also doing silly things when drunk. I just thought it was rather bizarre that he can quite happily brag about not following that particular tenet and yet claim that he'll quite happily try to follow this one even though it's going to be difficult for him.

It's called hypocrisy and double standards. It's quite fun really. Maybe it's to make up for the rest of the year in the hope that Allah doesn't smite him?

Be that as it may there are many Christians who go OTT and break a lot of the guidelines and some of which aren't even anything to do with religion but just basic moral conduct/code.

It's still a challenge and a worthy IMO being able to deal with Ramadan in spite of whatever indescretions you may or may not do.

Ish.

Muslims go without food and water (and cigarettes? Think it's anything that passes their lips) from sunrise until sunset, then they can eat and drink as much as they want during the night.

Must be pretty easy in the UK, especially if you're office based, Get up at 5 and have a big breakfast, fast all day in your office, then have a big dinner at 9-10ish.

Desert however it's a nightmare. Apparently muslim countries get a lot more fights and arguments during Ramadan as tempers get freyed far easier.

to be specific its from the break of dawn to sunset not sunrise as you said , sunrise is probably somewhere around 2 hours after the break of dawn so your not counting these 2 hours of the fast.

and at current timings you wont be getting "up at 5 and have a big breakfast" youll be most likely be getting up at about 3-3.30am. and the fast currently ends at about 8.25pm.

Yep, I'll be getting up at 3:15, make a big pot of mint tea and have some egg and toast before 4am. Will see how I last and might try and reduce the breakfast some more.

So is this good for loosing weight as well? I guess you are wasting less time eating as well and more time to do stuff during the day!!

It's not really designed for weight loss but of course it can help, it's focus is to appreciate what people have, and show a sense of strong will and devotion. Traditionally they often give money to the poor at the end of Ramadan. It sort of puts you in their shoes, though they don't get the feast on sun-down.

The streets of Morocco when I went, were wild in the evenings, fantastic fun! :D I tell you what though the party at the end of it is more than worth it!

I don't think I'd be able to cope not drinking water all day. I get terrible headaches if I don't drink it as I dehydrate like that *click*

Yeah, but it's also a time to ask for Forgiveness from Allah.

Reduce? Are you mad? :p

Are you training throughout ramadhan?

I want to try and push myself with the fasting....but maybe this is nothing more than pre-fasting bravado and I'll be on the paratha's before you know it :p

I've not been back to the gym since Jan - other commitments and loss of interest, not to mention being charged £60 p/m for a poncy gym made me change my mind.
