Ramadan Mubarak

I am not Muslim, although I do respect fasting and understand why they do it. I think its a good thing for the people that actually do this. Many people all over the world, homeless dying, disease, so less fortunate than us. If you can do the fast, then respect as I'm sure you will have more appretiation for the life you life, and give plenty of thought to the ones less fortunate, which is something you rarely get these days in other cultures.

What if someone "believes" that fasting is daft?

You've just insulted them?

Note: I'm not against someone believing what they like, so Ramadan Murbarak to all those who will be fasting.

Respect means not deliberately denigrating the topic at hand. I'm not saying "YOU MUST SAY NICE THINGS!!!", I'm more leaning to the point that if there's nothing nice to be said, don't bother saying anything at all. If a person doesn't like something that doesn't affect him in any way shape or form, he should move on.

If I go up to your mother and tell her that her hair looks daft, that's in the same vein as Estebanrey's remarks in this thread. A person who knows the concept of respect would simply not say anything about your mother's hair instead, opting to avoid being a dick. It's a very basic concept in today's society and one that sadly isn't exercised enough.

It's about keeping your ****ty opinions to yourself.

Fasting is actually very good for your health. It also clears you mind. That's probably how it came about in to various religions.

Nothing wrong with fasting at all.

European monks used to go on beer fasts. Eat nothing except beer. They brewed a special fasting beer with extra starches and low alcohol %.

Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present during that month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful. (Quran 2:185)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)”

The abstaining from food and drink I always find is the easy part. If the only thing you feel during Ramadhan is an empty stomach, you are doing something wrong. May Allah give us the ability to gain the most from this blessed month, Ameen. Ramadhan Mubarak brothers.

Why does God need us not too eat? Is he arrogant?

If we do not fast, or pray, not in the least bit will it affect God. However, if you believe in God, you will believe that our Creator knows what is best for us, since He created us, whereas those who do not believe in God tend to believe that we know what is best for ourselves so in essence they are their own gods.

The prophet PBUH has described fasting as a shield, in Islam we believe as human beings we have 'nafs' which loosely translates in English to our instincts/desires. Rather then live like animals where our desires control us, we are trained to control our desires.

I actually love these threads. At first it's disappointing that some people in GD have to sully perfectly innocent threads with their own hate-filled keyboard gushings, but then you realise the brain donors are actually doing you a favour and holding little virtual placards above their posts that say "I'm thick and shouty, ignore me at your leisure".

Saves a lot of time.
