Ramadan Mubarak

How bad is it on the body?

Traffic Cops on BBC had a Muslim copper that was fasting and he was trying to chase after a criminal and he just had no energy and had to stop and was being sick, I never thought it would impact on people like that bit silly letting someone fast when there job is to chase after people.

I fast for lent but its sensible because you can still eat thing during daylight hours.

if allahn cant let the old bill off snacking what hope do we have?

The confusion I feel at this thread sorta makes we wish I knew more about Islam. Although I'm atheist-agnostic myself I'm quite interested in studying religion but Islam is just completely unknown to me. There is only one solution...

...TO WIKIPEDIA :)

Not long left lads before munching up.... Thought it'll be hard. But, its going good atm... :)

I personally can't believe they're being pandered to by being on 'light duties'

He has already said that they are normally his hardest workers, why wouldn't you give them a little slack for something that is clearly extremely important to them?
You'd make a awful boss/team leader with an attitude like that imho!
It's all about give and take and being fair if you want a work force/team that is hard-working and ultimately more productive.

Ramadan Mubarak

They don't. They are free to eat at any time of the day.;)

Fair enough is that's what it's like where you work, but I've got friends working in Saudi and Bahrain who said they can't eat/drink during the day at the office. Heck one of my friends employers has a whole mutaween department on the floor above them... told him off for whistling once!

Anyways, that's off topic.

I love how everything turns into a debate! Shows the diversity of our board.

Happy fasting one and all!

The fast is from the very start of sunrise to the very start of sunset: approx. 3am to 10pm in the UK.

Ramadan Mubarak my fellow muzzies:p its been hard for me today as this year the fasts are longer than they were last year but one down and 29 to go.

Fasting is perfectly natural - animals don't get to pick and choose times to eat, predators don't get a kill every day and chase prey on empty stomachs - and there's plenty of research suggesting that practicing calorie restriction, or periods of fasting is actually good for the body compared to never being without food in you during the day. I'm on Intermittent Fasting - specifically Leangains and only eat between 1-9pm most of the time, it doesn't require any effort to maintain once the body adjusts after a day or two.

Ramadan Mubarak to all fellow Muslims.

And just lol at others trying thier best to derail thread, pathetic. Nice to see the OCUK community stand against these types.

Yeah but would they do if it wasn't written in their ancient book?

If not then all the talk about empathizing with the needy is disingenuous.

but that is the reason why we are "subscribed" fasting in the first place. Our religion wanted us to experience the hunger that poor people go through.

And to further add:

You cannot eat/drink anything from 2~ am to 9pm. that is 19 hours.. this is even hard if you work as you cannot sleep.

from 9pm to 2am, we can eat but we also have to go to christian's equivalent to "Midnight Mass?" (Praying for like 1hr 30~ ) so that leaves 3 hr 30 minutes,

And it is true, the fast is not just about abstaining from food, it is meant to change your lifestyle, i.e. you should abstain from all wicked things while fasting and hopefully carry this on after Ramadan is up.

We also believe that Devil is locked up in this month which is why I think people are more pious.

I believe the exemption is also available to those who are ill or pregnant as the fast is just intended to be for those who are healthy but I'm willing to be corrected on that.

Ramadan Mubarak to those who will be observing the fast.

Nop you are right. Although if you just have a headache, you are expected to keep the fast :p. it is for when you are seriously ill.

You still have to do your missed fasting later on, so if i miss one due to illness, i have to fast outside Ramadan for one day OR give some poor guy money equivalent to a day's food i.e. so he can eat twice.

Also if you fall ill during fasting you can break the fast without any penalty. However if you purposefully break the fast, or miss a fast for no reason then you would need to either fast continuously for 60 days OR feed 60 poor people or one poor person for 60 days..

so you can see that instead of giving money to the mosque, the emphasis here is to help the needy..

By that logic (when in Rome) no Muslims should be fasting here then

When you say they HAVE to adhere do you mean they just can't buy food at certain times or they could actually be arrested for eating a sandwich?

In one of my first jobs I worked with a few Muslims and during fasting periods I felt so uncomfortable walking into the staff room at lunch with a big bag of munchies from McDonald's whilst they were just sitting there unable to eat. We only had one staff room and I wasn't going to eat out on the street but at the same time I felt a bit guilty, whilst telling myself I shouldn't as it's their lifestyle choice.

like eadz? has said you shouldnt feel guilty but i guess it is human nature so be proud that you have decency and you are not selfish :)

as opposed to overweight policemen? or corrupt ones or violent ones..

"fasting" means to abstain from food/drink. how can you call lent fasting when you can still eat

With the increasing waist size in the Asian population which make up the Muslim majority in Britian I think fasting is a good thing. :D However it negates any benefit when you stuff your face before the pre-dawn meal and when it comes to break the fast.

The act of fasting itself has become commercialized when people don't observe it spiritually and follow the correct etiquette and self-restraint.

this is true, we do stuff overselves which we shouldnt but 19 hours of fasting and you dont care. and yeah you are right, people should be more pious but they are not.. it is like just abstaining from food/water but they dont change their behaviour etc.

Over the course of 24 hours would you say you eat more, less or the same amount of food compared to a regular day?

I would say eat less.. in summer days even less because you break fast at 9pm and then morning meal is 2am so you will still feel a bit full at 2am.

People read about Islam, the deen (religion) and you will know that la illaha illalahu muhammad rasoolula is true. There is only one god but allah and Muhammad (pbuh) is his servent and messenger.

Please dont be misguided and let the media think for you, read the quran and the english transliteration it is the most beautiful and truthful book you will ever read.

Mate, I respect your beliefs, how about you respect mine? You wouldn't appreciate it if I called you misguided.

I don't let the media think for me any more than I let a book think for me. I make up my own mind.
