ramthor's monster build

LOL did you even look at the desk? It doesn't get hot, what BS is that? It's a glass top. A 1.2 metre desk is too small?

If you don't like, just say so, don't make up rubbish.
From its description:
"Cool air is pulled in through the four front 120mm fans, and warm air is pushed out by the four rear 120mm fan. "
Warm air inside, then. Glass top gets warm.
Or maybe I'm wrong and it's cool.
Either way I don't like it.

And Where did I say you were wasting your money? I don't care how much you spend. Watercooling is a lot of hassle and it sounds like you are buying just to spend.
Did you hear yourself saying it?

So you've never even used one but you can state that it won't get warm? Right.
Have you ever touched the outside of a metal case with a high powered system inside? Even with fans the metal is still "warm" and therefore it's a safe bet the glass of that desk will also get warm.

I take it you also know what else he would like to have on his desk and therefore know that 1.2m is obviously more than big enough because who on earth would need more space than that right?

He also said he didn't like glass desk tops in the very quote you used in your reply.

It sounds like your getting butt hurt just for the sake of getting butt hurt.

Please excuse my ignorance but now I'm confused regarding RAM. I thought I need quad channel and yet your recommendation of Vengeance memory is dual channel.

Dual/Triple/Quad channel is a motherboard feature the RAM will work just the same, the usage of the channels when it comes to RAM kits is mostly just a marketing exercise.

Where does it say it doesn't get hot? It is a glass enclose with a bunch of high performance PC parts inside. My case has good airflow and quite a lot of fans and it still get's warm so it isn't unrealistic to think it could get hot, or at least warm.

He also didnt make up rubbish he said he is fine with his current desk and doesn't want a glass topped desk. What more of a reason does he need?

Some people in this thread need to take a chill pill and stop bashing this dude.

You need 4 sticks for your motherboard to run them in quad channel mode and they need to be installed in the correct slots on the motherboard. The correct slots are typically colour coded.

That corsair kit on the last page is 2x16gb sticks and will only work in dual channel mode and therefore isn't appropriate for this build.

I think you've misinterpreted what I said before.

quad channel requires multiples of 4 matching ram sticks.

how they're packaged is a marketing exercise since two 'dual channel kits' could be used together to run in quad channel mode if used together and are identical.

I didn't see your post just the reply from ramthor, but that's what I was getting at 2 packs of 2 "dual channel" sticks would work just as well as 1 pack of "quad channel" branded sticks.

Always go with a 32GB set over 2x 16GB sets. The memory controller on some of the Intel chips doesn't like multiple sets and will give you random issues.

I had this exact problem which would cause random BSoDs. Changed to a matched set and all was good.

Yes. The timings on the Vengeance are the same as the dominator, so it seems needless to waste extra "just because". Do you want to overclock the RAM?

Also.. a few posts up I recommended the newer Skylake processor and it was stated that you needed more cores for 4k video editing? If you aren't in to serious editing then just get the newer Z170 CPU and the motherboard if you want to futureproof a bit.

Agreed :)

As it's occasional encoding... then the 6700k might be a better bet for the higher FPS in games... the improvements for single core processing that Skylake brings are definitely noticeable.

But... OP mentioned he would like to go Titan XP SLI further down the line and the extra PCI-E lanes of a 40-lane option would be beneficial there. Especially as he'll also be using 4 lanes for a PCI-E type SSD (M.2 included).

In past generations it hasn't made much of a difference... but with Pascal, we are starting to see the limits of an 8x PCI connection.

Did you hear yourself saying it?

It depends on how you cool it.

If you stick a watercooled system in there, then the glass temperature will barely change as the heat exchange is much better and it will all go out.

But with a standard air system or even AIO system then yes, the glass will become noticeably warmer than normal temp without the pc in it or running.

I had a look at that, it's a funky idea... but for me the desk is so thick it would be annoying as I like to push myself up right to the edge & also, a 120cm desk is wayyyy too small for me... I like proper corner desks.

That should be the case but it's not always true.

I, and others, have had issues running two identical kits on the X99 platform especially as the IMCs on the CPUs (both BW-E and HW-E) are quite sensitive.

I didn't think that would be the case until I tried it and failed.

Best to purchase a quad channel kit to be certain... they are rarely much (if at all) more expensive.

Two sets of these will do it if a quad channel kit isn't available.

Not recommended...
