Random 3D printing chatter

I'm enjoying the designing and sketching of things to print immensely! Designed my own modular ITX/MATX open test bench thing - so that I can print an MATX motherboard tray on a 220x220mm bed.

I've printed a few prototypes in PLA and I think I'm nearly there with a final layout / design which allows an SFX PSU, 2 x 80mm fans, a 2.5" SSD and a 12mm round power switch to be located underneath the motherboard mounted to the side/front/rear panels - I have some CF PETG on its way to print the final version for heat resistance and a matte finish.

One further thing I want to add and prototype is proper support for the PCI-E cards, using this guide to adapt my drawings and sketches.

Fun, but very complicated for a Fusion 360 noob like me!

I was watching a video showing a lady who had designed her own parts and then printed them off on her Flashforge 5M Pro printer.
They included bracket supports where she could fit a big piece of wood to cover an otherwise entrance to a storage area. Some plastic blanks to cover open electrical terminals and some pla (?) Irwin clamp type covers.
Good to watch that happen, the clamp covers had already been designed and shared by someone else

Just to give an idea of what I described here;

Additional panels bolt to the ITX tray to increase its size up to MATX, and the panels move in the same direction as those extensions.

I've added threaded inserts between all parts of the motherboard tray (there are 3 additional pieces to turn it from ITX to MATX not pictured) and I'll be using them within the motherboard standoffs too purely due to the volume of use they'll get compared to the panels.

The side panels are printed with 2.65mm holes which M3 screws tap themselves in to - having watched this video I feel they're going to be perfectly strong enough for this purpose, especially as mavity is forcing the pieces together too.

Infill - just the default per the Creality slicer at the moment, which seems perfectly strong enough as there's more meat around the screw holes naturally - this is when in PLA though which has great rigidity naturally. When I print final version in CF PETG I will likely up the infill as it's a less rigid filament.

Still some prototyping left before I'm ready for that though!

The other thing that works well is to print the threads fully-modelled into the hole. It'll come out too small (especially when you're talking M3) but all the plastic will be in roughly the right place - ie the number of walls and so on. Then you run a tap down the hole to bring them to size. The printed threads at least partially guide the tap so it's easier to get it straight too. The only place this doesn't work are shallow blind holes....you just can't get the tap in because it's got a pointy end and a taper. You might get away with using a screw as a blunt-ended tap (more extreme than a bottoming tap) given that it's plastic and the threads are already printed but too small.

I think we're done!

Anyone ordering the Prusa Core One? The kit went live today with March being the expected delivery. The assembled units are starting to ship now. I am considering getting the kit to go along side the Bambu.

I have created a v2 already, which is a multi part print so you don't need supports to print but does require screwing together.

Also made the cup holder sections completely circular and 20mm deeper to ensure cups can't fall.

Scratched the itch I have had for a while to get into 3D printing and bought a Bambu P1S with AMS. Lovely looking bit of kit and first test print came out with a level of quality and rapid print head speed I was not expecting!

Really impressed so far and am looking forward to getting some practical designs made/printed.

Yup.....describes exactly my thought process!

Had you considered anything other than the PS 1..?
Did you buy it direct from Bambu, if so how long did it take to arrive.?
Amongst a couple of others, the Qidi Plus 4 is on my list to think about.

I did look at others, including A1, P1P offerings from Bambu. I get that Prusa is one of the OGs but without brand loyalty I cant see what you get for double the money.

I wanted to be able to work with more than just PLA and an enclosure was going to be inevitable with ABS, PETG etc.

The P1S/AMS combo was very aggressively priced and everything I read was positive. Less tinkering and accessible printing was high up on my priority list. I don't care about this Bambu Cloud drama so wasn't something that put me off. I'm new to 3D printing and I was unboxed and printing within 30 minutes.

I bought from Additive-X and they were RAPID. Ordered on the 12th and arrived with me today! I am not mainland either so I was not expecting to get it until next week.

Good to know, thanks. IIRC it was Solid Print 3D that are an authorised dealer I looked at, for Bambu.

Putting aside the recent drama regarding that brand, and being closed source, if that bothers you, they do seem to offer a decent OOB experience.
It seems, to me anyway, they have brought the workshop type 3D printers to be as close to being mainstream for the home.

Still yet to decide, and I have not dismissed Bambu.

Good to read how quickly you got printing.

I went on the Solid Print 3D website and their web shop was broken for me. Couldn't add anything at all to the basket and couldnt get a response on web chat.

Reached out to Additive-X who were very responsive so went with them.

I remember speaking to Solid Print and they told me that as they are an authorised dealer any support or warranty concerns, including parts, works be dealt with by them.
Probably Additive will also be the same.

IRRC SP had sold out of many of the Bambu printers. Perhaps due to the Chinese new year.
