Random blank screen crashes

Damn :(. I hope you get it sorted.

105'C on the diode for throttling with the GTX. 95'C on the heatsink. I had my frames cut by about 65 - 75% when my card was overheating.

I might see if I can disable the TDR feature in Vista. It's aimed to improve the user experience by restarting the graphic card if a problem is detected, this usually will avoid the need to reboot because of a graphical issue.

I reckon Vista thinks there's a problem, attempts to restart the driver which results in a BSOD.

I've got Titan Quest running on compatibility mode (XP SP2) (don't ask why this wasn't one of the first things I tried :p).

Hasn't crashed yet, although I haven't played for that long in a row since. I'll test on Tuesday (day off :D) and let you know.

Ive started getting this problem this morning, nothing has changed for months, even the overclock has been steady for 18 months

Im on Windows XP, DS3 motherboard, 2gb (2x1) Geil, E6300 and the BFG 7950GT

Id say it was game/graphic related as it happens when i start WoW up, but then sometime it does it while its posting. Although I havent waited long enough for blue screen, it goes blank, screen goes into standby...then i reboot.

Running now without the second monitor and its ok now, might try the game in a minute

Yours sounds like more a hardware problem if it's doing it at POST every so often, no drivers or anything have kicked in by then.

Maybe just your monitor on it's way out :)

I've now turned TDR off using the following key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicDrivers
TdrLevel REG_DWORD 0

See this: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/wddm_timeout.mspx if you want more information.

Hey craig, I found this thread while searching through google for a solution to the exact same problem that I've been getting on my new gaming PC. I have a pretty similar set up to you (only I have an 8800GT and I'm on vista32) and the exact same thing happens to me after about 30 minutes to an hour of playing team fortress 2, day of defeat source or WoW. It's becoming really annoying anyway and I'm certain its not a hardware problem, especially since when I went back to the 169.21 drivers the crashes happened ever 30 mins - 1 hour (as opposed to 10 - 15 minutes on the 175 drivers).

Have you had any luck yet with a solution?

Interestingly enough, this never happens on crysis, most likely because it's a DX10 app that's actually officially supported by vista

I sent an email to point of view (my graphic's card manufacturer) asking for a fix to the problem, and they sent this to me:

Dear sir

Thank you for having our product

We discovered very indental the mounting screws for the cooler are not tight enough , what means the cooler is not touching all memory chips, the card will be too hot and crashes . I would recommend to see if you can tighten the screws , to see if the issue is solved

It is also recommended to install the latest drivers 175.16 .

When this will not solve the issue , please return this card to your reseller for warranty

With kind regards

Hmm, I might give this a try. Perhaps it is a hardware problem after all. It still doesn't make much sense though considering that crysis isn't affected, also I told the guy that my 8800GT runs at about 45 degrees C when running games

You should try the same thing to craig, you never know it might just work

Well I opened up my PC today and guess what, the screws connecting the GPU and fan together weren't tight at all, in fact some of them were just barely on to say the least. So I went ahead and screwed them back in, installed the latest driver and played Day of Defeat source for about 40 minutes there, and so far everything seems fine. When I had that driver installed previously it would crash every 10 - 15 minutes, I'll have some sort of a marathon tonight for about and hour and half just to make sure.

Hmmm strange, so it seems to have worked even though your card wasn't overheating in the fist place?

Yeah seems like it, maybe speedfan wasn't detecting the right temperatures or something. Either way the fan wasn't touching all the chips so that seemed to be the problem.

The whole thing doesn't make much sense especially since crysis worked fine... its a strange problem but i think its finally fixed now

i'll report back later tonight just so i'm certain

What make card do you have, I don't remember seeing any screws as such. BFG 8800GTX here.

[Edit]
I take that back, there are a lot of screws :p

Not one of them was fully tightened. Hopefully it'll sort my prob.
