Hiya guys

Having a bit of a problem with my PC lately, my system has been built for a good couple of years now with no problems at all but recently i have been having small lock ups which are consistently spaced apart like a few seconds apart this can happen when playing a game or even just on the desktop (mouse locks up) the only way to fix it is by restarting the PC this seems to be happening every few days my 2500k was overclocked and stable at 4.5ghz and i have put everything back to factory settings in case this was the problem but nothing seems to be helping any advice would be great as i am completely out of ideas on what it could be :(

Thanks in advance.

Maybe worth looking at the status of your primary OS hardrive (S.M.A.R.T.).

To see if there are any bad sectors.

And best give the full spec of your system.

I was experiencing lock - ups recently but it only seemed to be on the desktop, usually when browsing the Internet or watching a video. I took out the graphics card and ran the system on the on - board graphics. Problem vanished, sent the system back to ocuk who tested the system and replaced the graphics card. Had the system back yesterday and problem seems to have vanished!

I checked out my SSD status and that is all fine, i have recently moved my page file from my SSD to my secondary HDD would this cause any issues ? was trying to save some space on the SSD. I will check out my hardware during the day removing and adding to see if i can locate any failing.

Specs are :

Gigabyte z68ap-d3 mobo
i5 2500k stock atm was 4.5ghz
sapphire HD7950 Boost
2x 4GB corsair 1600mhz DDR3
120GB PNY SSD
2TB seagate barracuda HDD
Coolermaster modular 620w PSU
fractal r4 case nothing gets hot at all.

Try using a different USB controller. If your board has a separate USB 3.0 hub try using that instead and diabling your other USB ports to see if it fixes it.

I had the same thing on my Wifes PC, the PC would hard lock the mouse and keyboard but everything else would carry on as normal. Spent ages testing memory, hdd, psu, cpu, gpu etc.

In the end it turned out to be the onboard USB controller had gone iffy. Disabled it and slapped in a £8 PCI USB 2.0 card and the problem was gone. :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Its not just the mouse and keyboard locking up the whole system does for a brief second then its fine for about 3 seconds and this repeats until i hard reset the system. When it happens during gaming if i try to quit out of the game it will stay locked up.

This *should* be related to recent USB3 faulty drivers (there was this as a known issue, most recent drivers fixed it). In general terms it sounds like software issue.

I do have a PCI sound card installed, i removed my CMOS battery this morning for 5 mins to reset everything so going to see if that fixes anything first if not i guess that sound cards coming out :P thanks for the help.

I'm not sure if it was the MoBo not liking something in the PCI slot or if it was the WiFi card itself causing the issues but either way it sounds like a driver issue.

Frustrating as hell though, I tried fresh OS installs and all sorts. It only did it with my new SSD though, was fine with the old HDD... Very odd.
