Random freezes with windows 7

So I upgraded from my 'barely able to run mspaint' pc and whole new parts except HDD and disk drive. Components are as following:

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3-B3 Mobo
Coolermaster 650w PSU
Corsair 8GB RAM
XFX Radeon HD 6870
Intel i5 3.3Ghz 2500k PCW

I installed Windows 7 64bit and every now and then my PC will freeze. The LEDs in my mouse will go off, keyboard is unresponsive and I get a nasty screech coming from the speakers (you know, a freeze...). This can happen from any amount of time the pc is on, from 5 mins after start up to 5 hours. After it freezes I have to hard reset.

I am also unable to launch games as they stay on for 30 seconds or so and will crash to desktop. Im guessing this is related to the random desktop freezes.

All drivers are up-to-date and I have checked my BIOS to see if the memory is running at speeds it should be (1333) and the voltage is correct along with the CPU's.

Ive also ran stress tests on the components and they all seem to be in working order with no crashes.

The only thing I can think of is if it is my HDD as this happened with my old computer but occurred my frequently, even though it has been formatted since. Which is why I was using XP instead of 7.

Im running out of clues and Its slightly annoying as I have lots of work to do.

What's BCLK running at in the mobo BIOS?

Have you done any "autotune" overclocking? The Sandy Bridge processors run everything off BCLK and moving BCLK away from 100MHz can cause random crashes.

Also try a memtest86...

Yeah it was set to Auto but I changed I changed it to 100Mhz, but its still the same. Ill try the memtest now.

Yeah the scan ran quite fast so i couldnt spot anything. Is there a log?

So I ran memtest and everything seemed to be in order, no errors.
That leaves this Manufacturer disk check. (be a good 6hours)
And if that doesnt work, im going to dropkick my pc?

have you carried over your HDD from your old PC to this one? sounds like HDD to me..

edit: sorry I actually read all of your post again and you have answerd this already

I downloaded Seatools and ran the longest scan. Tried running it last night but it took too long and ended up turning it off to get to sleep. Ive ran the 'Long Generic' scan which is the one that takes the ****. I used the SMART scan which literally took seconds and nothing was reported.

And yeah stueng, But my HDD had this problem since the day I got it with my old components, I just figured it was crashing often 'cause my last setup was old and dying.

Have you tried running the system in safe mode? If it's stable in safemode you could be looking at a driver problem.

Might be worth taking out the 6870 too and using the IGP to see if that makes any difference. Try launching a game with the IGP and see if the rig still stalls after 30secs or so.

Fresh install, but I had vanilla XP on it. So ive got old windows files on here still.
Just ran a SFC and I had 7 corrupt files. It said I need to reboot but then it said they were fixed. Ill reboot anyway

Ran it again with 0 errors. So I don't know what that's changed.
Yeah Ill try using the IGP later. Haven't tried it Safe mode yet, it'll be worth a try though.

Why do you still have the old windows install still on the HDD? You should have formatted the drive and installed Windows 7 "fresh".

It's sounding more and more like a driver conflict to me.

because when I formatted with the xp disk it installed xp after. then i just put the 7 disk in after thinking it would replace the windows files. But it should work fine like that anyway, shouldnt it? (In theory).

Hadn't installed any drivers/updates on xp though, as soon as I installed it the 7 disk went straight in

It's just wasting space on the HDD. I think you'd be best off doing a fresh install, it doesnt take long and you can reclaim that "lost" HDD space.
