6. can the ps3 see apple OS wireless servers, AAC stored audio files

7. is the ps2 compatability of the 60gb version better than owning an actual ps2 unit in terms of gfx and loading times or the opposite

Resistance 2 / Killzone 2 I believe. I always forget which is first. Could be little big planet actually, though it doesn't interest me at the moment. Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are the real hype machines.

2. do you think they will improve alone in the dark (controls mainly) as its a good three months out for release despite an earlier 360 launch
Nope.

3. is mgs4 the finest piece of work ever, a bit over-hyped or fun for newcomers to the franchise
Nope, yes and yes.

4. is the 40gb version an ATA hdd interface
Yes, I believe so.

5. how do you put media, pics, vids etc onto the ps3 in a format acceptable (40gb version)
Copy them across a network
USB stick
Burn them to disc.
Direct from digital camera.

6. can the ps3 see apple OS wireless servers, AAC stored audio files
I can use WinAMPs 'Orb' to see songs over a network, so 3rd party is possible.

7. is the ps2 compatability of the 60gb version better than owning an actual ps2 unit in terms of gfx and loading times or the opposite
It can upscale PS2 games.

8. is there a decent GITS franchise game in dev
Don't think so.

thanks to anyone who takes the time to help answer!
Hope it helps.

I think it depends if you played and enjoyed the old games, if you did you'll love it, it's made for the fans. New comers might want to go back and play the old ones.

Hmmm... very good questions on the MGS front. No it isn't the finest game ever, it contains elements that are the finest ever seen in a game but the game as a whole isn't. While the gameplay, music and direction will be enjoyable to a newbie i would strongly recommend that a person were to at least play MGS1&3 before moving on to MGS4 purely because what is a good game to a new person becomes a truly fantastic game to someone who knows the characters and story.

Nokkon answered the rest, FFXIII is another big one which hasn't really been given a release date, online stores reckon November this year though i'm dubious.

[EDIT] I wouldn't say MGS4 didn't live up to its hype as it was nowhere near the scale of say, GTA4. It was hyped up heavily amongst fans but people who weren't clued up didn't know when it was coming, marketing was not as violently shoved down our throats. With GTA4 EVERYONE (even my girlfriend) knew when the release date was, so that would be a perfect example of not living up to the hype. Amongst fans MGS4 was hyped as potentially the best game ever, as the game was heavily geared towards fan service it has fulfilled that hype for many. Personally, the jury is still out whether it's the best game ever, it's certainly among them though.

POSSIBLE SPOILER...

for me the first major cutscene involving jack was possibly the finest gaming moment i have ever witnessed. incredible action sequence and wonderful set piece for the pace of the games new twists.... i think the debate over the aforementioned characters addition to the series was swiftly settled with his appearence in this installment... he became a legend instantly in my eyes! awesome comebacl by hideo to silence any remaining player haters! he obviously took notes from the community when drafting this chapter in mgs =>

The ps3 uses sata 2.5" notebook hard drives and you would backup your data first with a usb flash etc if you had any to backup and then just install the new drive which shouldnt take long at all and there are a few guides on the net , i have just ordered a drive for mine which i should get done over the weekend .

you played the old mgs then?

yup every one... my handle should give you a pretty good idea that im pretty obsessed with machina! the mgs series is for me the single most important gaming franchise to date, apart from maybe res/evil...

hideo is a god as far as i am concerned, his ability to tell a story with unlimited depth is for me, at least, what inspires me to take time off work (and life!) in order to enter his role playing world of incredibly fascinating imagination... the guy is unbelievably intelligent and profoundly adept at story-telling. his creation is not only a gaming masterpiece in my eyes but a philosophical masterpiece akin to the works of many great minds that have long since passed from this life...

the character development throughout the series has been breath-taking, the use of timelines, technological advances, political motivation (especially for an eastern born, educated and native mind) he has shown an immense understanding of western existence, its values, motivations and worldly ambitions... the guy is a LEGEND in my eyes. anyone who can deliver a game with such intelligent meaning is truly a pioneer and worthy of the highest accolade.

i have been a game enthusiast for over 20 years and i have never experienced such depth as what mgs1 offered to someone who was willing to sit back and see a video game as more than just blind escapism.

well im ranting and blowing smoke up his ass but i really do see the mgs series as game creations finest hour, only half life came anywhere close to offering the level of immersion that this does....

does that answer your question?? =>

i have a terabyte WD storage device here so thats no problem at all... i think i have an 80gb 2,5 here but i am convinced it has been damaged and has a number of bad sectors.... will the ps3 have the means to identify these and not write data to them if i install it or will i run the risk of heartache taking a gamble that it isnt clever enough to avoid these sections... ahhh i should probably buy a new 120gb drive they are so cheap!

After MGS4, The next BIGrelease for me is Final Fantasy 13. So i have a hell of a wait.

Unless we are talking cross platform games too, in which case Res Evil 5.

Nope, yes and yes.

Without turning this into a battle... I've read through the MGS4 thread, and you havent posted in there much. And on that note, Just wondered if you have the game or have played the game?

MGS4 has easily lived up to expectations for myself. Which means it doesn't appear to have been over hyped. And it's definately the better game out of the 4 in the series. Not that the other ones are bad. I loved them like my own babies.

MGS4 > MGS3 > MGS1 > MGS2 :) And just for scale, MGS2 is an absolutely sublime game.

So considering MGS, Final Fantasy and Res Evils are my favourite series out EVER. That would mean MGS4 is one of the finest pieces of work ever... for me :p

I wouldnt risk it if you think it has bad sectors and like you say the drives are cheap anyway , this is the one i am getting http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...60GB 5400RPM SATA 8MB Cache - OEM (WD1600BEVS) you cant complain at that price :) .

1) Next big exclusive game? Or next big game? For Exclusives Next big games I would say are the Ferrari challenge game in July, Wipeout HD in the Summer, followed by Socom in September and Littlebigplanet October then Resistance 2 in November.

2) Im not sure on this, sometimes if a PS3 game is released later they "tweek" it but mostly its the same, only time will tell.

3) All I will say its the finest game I've played this gen, is it better than mgs1, in many ways yes, but i liked mgs3 more than 1. Its still like all the other MGS games , a bit marmite but this one is far more accessible to new game players even if the story isnt, thats why the metal gear database is being released today on PSN.

4) The 40Gb uses a 2.5" sata drive, a laptop drive basically, but some users on here use a caddy and a special cable to use a normal 3.5 sata drive outside the PS3.

5) With a 40 the two main ways to get media on is either with a USB stick/ HDD or copy it when streaming across from a PC. You could also plug in your in camera to the USB port, on the old 60 it was a bit easier as it hard memory card slots.

6) Not sure if, but there are a few third party mac apps that do work.

7) The only advantage of the 60 PS3 over a PS2 is that it can upscale PS2 games, the controller is wireless and you can have several memory cards on the go at once. The problem is the 60Gb PS3 isnt 100% compatible and quite a few games although playable may have few issues, quite a few games that uses a peripheral such as guitar hero do not work very well.

8) Not heard of any

i havent been involved in the thread purely because i have been taking my time with mgs4 not spending huge amounts of time on it and savoring the experience. i play an act at a time and take a few days break to consider the impact that each chapter has on the series and the game itself.

i dont understand why people are looking for faults in it, for me the gfx are the best i have ever seen, maybe because the action is so intense i don't visually gauge each texture but simply allow myself to be completely immersed in the scene and what opportunities it presents...

i thought mgs3 was absolutely breathtaking and i would play it through again anyday but this is a whole new experience and one i rate massively at only 13 hours through (act 3 still) truly visionary design and creation that deserves a little diligence to appreciate its overwhelming beauty!
