[Rant] Do red lights not apply for horses?

Bah. Stuck in Windsor this morning trying to get into work. I'm on a roundabout waiting for the lights to go green when a train of about 30 horses ridden by what I assume is the army as they're dressed in camo start crossing the roundabout.

The light goes red as they cross the roundabout and they keep on going. It goes green and they keep on going. It goes red again and they keep on going. Thus starts lots of honking behind me because I don't want to nudge into a group of horses.

Serious question, aren't horses just like any other road users in that they have to obey traffic signals?

Just like many cyclists, horse riders are a law unto themselves. If you dare suggest they are doing something wrong they will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger.

They are all a ****** pain in the backside and just do as they please.
The second you even get close to a cyclist though they get all ****ey!

The biggest problem I have with cyclists riding through red lights though is when its a green light for pedestrians to cross and the cyclists just continue to steam through the people crossing and have the cheek to glare at you and give some verbal for getting in their way.

if it was some sort of procession, like you said there were 30 or so, then id assume youd have to be a bit soft in the head to then get upset about being held up by the traffic lights because they were trying to proceed together.

would you rather a group of 15 horses waiting waiting 50 metres up the road in a petrol station or on the pavement waiting for the other 15 horse?

If they are going to do that, then where is their police escort?

do they need a police escort? a little common sense can go a long way

If they are blindly disregarding traffic signals then of course they should have proper precautions. What they are doing is inconvenient and potentially dangerous to other road users.

i know, but for the sake of you having to wait a further 90 seconds, is it worth them having to wait en masse down the road or having to phone the police and ask for an escort?

you will only have 90 seconds of your life wasted 4-5 miles down the road when another berk is using the wrong lane or whatever.

regardless of whether theyre annoying but horses, berks in the wrong lane, vauxhall drivers, theyre all entitled to use the road

If I'm sat at a cross roads at night and the lights are red, even if it's clear I don't just ignore them.

regardless of whether theyre annoying but horses, berks in the wrong lane, vauxhall drivers, theyre all entitled to use the road legally

Had this issue with cyclist before on crossing, the difference is we did move, they had to stop and nearly fell off, lessoned learned me thinks.

As a cyclist, horse rider, driver and motorcyclist I've seen many examples of utter stupidity and selfishness on the roads regardless of the transport being used by the offender.

What happens is, taking riding a horse on the road for example, is that some people in cars etc think that even when you're riding normally and safely, you're holding them up so that gives them the right to drive dangerously, shout about at you and deliberately use their horn to spook the horse, maybe to get you thrown off or make it charge off. After a few of those idiots, you tend to just take your liberties a little more to protect yourself. One day one I'm gonna wake up flat on my back between a horse and car and its not going to be pretty and I'd ave just been tootling along right up to the curb like a cyclist.

When cycling recently I've been very impressed with regular motorists and their consideration. I make sure I keep a good pace when needed, I make sure I make it clear that I'm pulling out to pass parked cars and I do it in good time and make sure people can anticipate my movements which helps a lot I think. It's just shame others can't. I would never skip a red light at a crossing or junction, but road works I will if there's enough room or another way round. Cycling on country roads which is my route home every night car drivers tend to go completely on the opposite side of the road approaching blind bends. I just winder how they can follow a tractor at 15mph for miles when I'm in my car, but overtake me on my bike like I'm a tractor doing the same speed in a really stupid place.

That said, I don't live in a big town or city. I don't have to deal with hustle and bustle but it makes the offenders stand out so much more. People round here would recognise that a big group of horses is not an every day thing and that they are just trying to protect themselves. A few mins out of one day isn't really worth getting twisted undies over.

Big deal, you got delayed by a few minutes. I see nothing wrong with them going through a red light. :) Just be considerate and know your place. :p

For the record I've seen a horse spooked by a car before and it wasn't pretty for the car or the horse so I give them plenty of room and space, but to go back to my OP there's being considerate for fellow road users and then there's taking the mick.

I wonder why...

I won't defend cyclists who ride stupidly and ignore red lights, there is no defence, but impatient and stupid drivers don't seem to realise how vulnerable someone on a bike is. You get a bit too close to a car and you trade paint, get too close to a cyclist and you'll do them serious injuries.

Traffic light cameras don't get them, therefore they must be exempt.

Anyway, since when could a bloody horse read the highway code?

This forum ! :rolleyes::p:D
