Raptor or 7200.10?

I really can't decide whether to purchase a WD Raptor (150Gb version) or a larger capacity 7200.10 (SATA) as my new boot drive.

I know raptors are fast due to their high spindle speed. However, I have also heard the 7200.10's are good as they "pack" their data more closely so it can be read from the disk faster.

My set-up consists of two drives in my PC. One has OS and utilities on it, the other is purely for games.

My data is stored externally on a NAS box.

Would I notice any difference between the two HDDs?

Thanks

As I always say in threads such as this, Raptors are pretty much a total waste of money.

Any 7200PRM Seagate or Samsung drive with 16MB cache will be more than good enough. A pair in RAID 0 will be even better.

There are numerous benchmark results online, all of which I am currently too tired to find and link to. :p

Basically the price premium is just not worth it for the slight performance increase. I'm sure someone else will back me up on this. :)

Yep, i know they can be beaten by a RAID set-up. However, I do not wish to go down the RAID route.

Basically then, a 7200.10 will, in real world applications not benchmarks, be the best option for me?

Ex 150GB / 74GB Raptor user here, bought the Seagate 7200.10 500GB & to be honest I dont notice any difference in speeds lol :) the Seagates are much much quieter & well the obvious thing is much more storage space. . . defragging the hard-drive will probally make a difference but whats a few minutes! I generally do defragging when I'm away from the PC - run it & watch tv for abit. . :) :p

I went from 2 x 74Gb Raptors (RAID0) to 300Gb (single drive) to 2 x 250Gb (RAID0).

Found the Raptors too noisey and pricey for disk size.

Probably going to buy a Seagate or Samsung for my IcyBox enclosure.

That's really not worth paying so much extra for.
Thats a matter of opinion besides some people might have more money than sense! :( lol I bought my 74GB & 150GB within a few days of them being released, they were faster than any drives currently out at the time.

Should get a very good price for them still, as people will still buy them because they think they are worth it..... not anymore!!!!! :)

Saves a fortune in ear-plugs...! <j/k> lol

I went from a Seagate 7200.10 250gb to a 74 gb Raptor. I didn't notice a difference at first but after some use I notice that windows is a lot more 'snappy' now and loading times are slightly reduced. Also the Raptor is quicker at seek and transfer.

I am pleased I bought mine as it does what I want and I don't need storage, just speed, so cost per gb and things like that don't bother me.

I think you will only notice a difference depending what your doing with it as in everyday use there is very little in it.

Both my drives are in Silentmaxx enclosures - nice and quiet.

I certainly wouldn't use anything other than a raptor for my OS/games drive.

Everything is subjective though. You have to ask yourself if you would really notice the difference. :)

The new Western Digital 'AAKS' drives are very close for day to day use.
I've just fitted one to try out in place of a Raptor 150. First thing you notice is how much quieter it seems :)
I do love the out and out performance of the Raptor series......just wish they could quieten down the seek noise.
