Hi,

Ive been through 4 raptors in the past and ALL of them failed one after the other giving me about 3-12 months use each.

I got the 74GB versions - and have let me down. they were ever installed one at a time, when it failed, i had to get it RMA'd - and one after the other have been through 4 of them.

At first they were lightening speed, then problems ranged from VERY loud whirring sounds to clunking clunking sounds.

i have only used these for the primary hard drive for windows and progams.

overall ive read a lot of people are satisfied with these drives, but over the years they have dissapointed me.

maybe i was just unlucky and got all the crap batches everytime :-)

I’ve had a 74GB Raptor drive (the 8mb version) since they were released years ago and it’s never given me any problems whatsoever.

You must just be very unlucky!

Had 2 x 74GB Raptors (8MB cache) in RAID0 for two and a half years and they never missed a beat...certainly very unfortunate that all 4 because faulty.....there could possibly be (as already mentioned) some other bit of hardware partly responsible for their demise, as it does not seem lightly that you have had 4 "bad" Raptors in a row...:)

thanks, so okay. you say it could be the PSU or the Mobo doing this to them? but i have a secondary hard drive too (SATA Western Digital 250GB) and that has lasted me 4 years, i would imagine if it was the mobo or PSU the same should have happened to this drive too?

thanks

Hi,

Did you ever check what are their temps were like? The maximum operational temperature for most drives is 55C. The newer Seagates have a maximum of 60C. (As an aside: I've also got three 3.5year old 8MB Raptors none of which has missed a beat or has a single error on them yet. But I make a point of keeping my drive temps under 40C.)

to be honest ive never checked the temperature of either drives. the raptors, or the other 250GB drive i have. but in saying that my case has 7 cooling fans 2 of which are right in front of the HDDs.

I dont think temperature would have been the problem, as my secondary 250GB drive never had no probs.
