Rate the new FPS demo engines

i think crysis does very well considering the sheer amount of objects it need to render and calculate, although as others have said, the physics on the houses are laughable.

i can picture someone just leaning on a wall on korea and the entire 3 story house just falls on them.
The physics are not always meant to be realistic. Sometimes it's necessary to ignore real-world physics in order to enhance the gameplay.

Shooting someone at close range with a shotgun should just punch a hole in them, not send them flying through the air "hollywood style", but it feels better to see them flying, so that's how Crytek implemented it. It's the same with buildings, a grenade would not blow the walls and roof off a building "hollywood style", but it looks and feels much better, again adding to the gameplay.

The 'speed' is always relative to visual quality and PC specs, so it's not possible to give a score that's directly comparable to anyone else's score (except when using identical hardware and settings).

the UT3/gow engine, although technically looks good, detailed, good shadows, etc, its way too bright, and there is a distinct lack of colours imho.

Then you're using a certain post-processing mode then, take it off Intense.

One thing UT3/GoW aren't is bright, unless you're using Intense which looks crap.

how can I turn the visuals of UT3 up?

in the demo you just have 2 options which you can put on 1-5. thats it.

I think UT3 doesnt look anywhere close to the screens. are there ways to get it nicer?

Crysis Demo
Visuals = 9.5 (I was expecting ever prettier, but still this game rocks)
Physics = 9 (very nicely done)
Stability = 10 doesn't crash
Speed = 8 : it runs ok now, but I would have prefered it with 4XAA and still have 60fps constant

UT3 Demo
Visuals = 7 (not impressed)
Physics = 7 some nice effects, thats it though.
Stability = 10 (No crashing and loading is pretty fast)
Speed = 10 (runs amazing, but so does UT2004)

Unfortunately the demo lacks the higher res textures (i assume this is to lower the file size), so all you get is medium or low. If you want a better idea of how crisp the UE3 engine can be gears of war is your best bet.

Is the demo out yet?

I wanna try that one.

I personally think the main beef people have with Crysis is the performance hog it is compared to said video

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/19965.html?type=

Obviously the Dev's made a very small map so performance was better, and on Max the game currently looks more like DX9.

But, looking at that vid, it seems strange to me, I mean, it almost looks as though there is less Subsurface scattering going on in the DX10 vid, giving everything a more 'solid' feel.

Infact, the DX10 vid just feels darker.

edit: Hell, I even think they are blurring a lot of the screen even when quick motion isn't used. Just pause the video at any time and notice how much blur there is on the gun model.

IMO it's just different lighting. Plus AA and a good framerate. If there's one feature that looks missing in the demo it's the sun light going through the leaves (ie. the leaves have a bit of translucency like real leaves do).

Physics = 7 (People explode into bits, yum.)
Physics = 3 (Are there even any real physics effects in this game? :/)

How can you say that UT3 physics are better than CoD4? Ok so we have not played UT3 yet, but from the demo and GoW there appears to be next to no physics stuff going on. There are no objects lying around, the movement is very fluid, vehicles are generic - there are just no fancy effects. People exploding into bits is hardly involves advanced physics calculations!

CoD4 is not much better in terms of items etc, as often they are just fixed. However, it allows you to shoot through objects and destroy walls etc. It even calculates the damage reduction of the bullets depending the type and thickness of the material you are shooting through. I've not seen this in many other games, if any.

Originally I gave UE3 Physics a 5 but then I remembered things like the tornado and exploding bodies. Tbh though there really isn't much between 1 and 10 in the physics score because it's either there or it isn't, it's just a matter of where the physics are applied to.

And I didn't know that about COD4. That's pretty cool.
