Raw cat food, good or bad.

Just don't go dry only.

That's a bit of a myth that doesn't hold water (pun intended) anymore.

Many cats do just fine on dry food only, including mine. You do have to keep an eye out for urinary tract infections and need to ensure a "appealing" source of water is always available - i.e. not just a bowl of water as cats have a suppressed thirst response unlike dogs who drink voluntary. My cats have never suffered any complications from dry food only - quite the opposite for instance in terms of the health of thier teeth especially.

I'm assuming they go out though, and can supplement as needed. Indoor only cats shouldn't really be fed dry only, especially as not all cats the same thirst drive.

When I used to have a cat we fed him the usual supermarket cat food. However on occasion I would see him catch a bird in the garden and eat the entire thing. I guess most cats that go outdoors eat some raw creatures regardless!

Decent mix of dry food with the odd small pouch as a treat.

We keep a "Had pouch tonight" note on the door of the cat food cupboard to stop the cheeky feline from mouching a pouch whoever got home last.

All our cats were fed a mixture of wet food and dry from a variety of brands from super markets own to whiskers and those that didn't get killed by cars lived into their late teens/early twenties with no significant health complaints.

All this RAW food and IAMS stuff is just marketing crap aimed at parting sentimental fools from their money. If your cat is fat it's your fault feed it less.

He's based in on pretentiousness and snobbery rather than evidence.

All dog and cat food have to meet 'human consumption' food standards nowadays.

That doesn't anything . Cats are Obligate Carnivore, in that it is a necessity that they eat meat. If you look at the contents of cheap supermarket cat food, it contains very little meat. It also contains a lot of padding ingredients which contain a high percentage of carbohydrates. These are not good for cats, they have no dietary need for carbohydrates, and eating too much can cause illness. The reason a lot of cats enjoy cheap food, is because of the flavours that are added specifically to do this.
Just because it is edible by a human, doesn't mean it is actually good for cats.

Edit - this doesn't mean that cats who eat cheap supermarket food will get ill, it means that in general it is considerably better for them to eat food with a high meat content, and low carb content.
