its still coaxial so pretty much flies itself

buy phoenix and start with a hobbyking 450 they are clones of trex.

use phoenix to get used to the controls and once you can hover on that without fluffing up the controls you should be fine outside with a real heli aslong as you take it slow

I would say a great first heli up from the coaxials like the S107G is the wltoys v911. It has full 2.4GHz wireless, is amazing outdoors, and is available for around £30. I love it!

Cool, join up when you can. You'll probably get a 2nd Hand Tx and the Sim on there too I had my Sim and 450 from there so it's all good.
Lol, repair bills are relatively low for the 450 and spares only cost a few quid each at the most.

I'm just over the mountain from you in the Rhondda if you ever fancy a fly sometime. You're more than welcome to try out my 450 before buying?

I would get a heli to get orientated first. Sims are good but there is nothing to substitute the field.

Thats why I always recommend a good co-axial just to get controller orientation.

this is going to start costing me! The more i read and look, the more I want a FBL TREX500 to build. I'm still going to get the DX6 and sim to start though. I'm still tempted to get the blade msxr to learn with and fly indoors though. BNF models can be had for around £70-£80.

Yes I was a model flyer and though fixed wing was my thing I did own an ic helicopter and flew it without issues but be warned, I was in a flying club and have seen many profesional R/C pilots trash their pride and joy not through pilot error but some kind of machanical failure, they are a complex machine and so much can go wrong with these things even with regular checks.
I have been to model airshows where pros have got it wrong including a £14,000 gas turbine heli that suffered machanical failure while in flight and was totally writen off.

It is a very rewarding hobby when you have a trouble free days flying but you will have bad ones and very expensive repairs.

I just fly the £40 jobs round my living room now and enjoy a spot of floating with my 6foot span glider down the local park.

You flew your heli without issue, but so many things can go wrong with them?
As long as the "regular checks" are thorough and correct then I see little to go wrong with them. Obviously there are things that you can't check or foresee going wrong, like a motor failing or a battery dying mid flight. But if the heli and Tx is setup properly then the heli is savable to some degree. Like you said, even the pro's have crashes. It's part and parcel of the hobby.
Let's not go giving the guy advice based on your own bad experience?
There's absolutely no need to "stick to the £40 jobs". Where's the fun in flying the boring micro'copter 'round the living room?

I'm finding that the second hand dx6 units are going for around 70ish and most don't include the receiver (which I know is only a few more quid). When they are 118 new, hardly seems worth the difference. Need to search more on the sim. Can you network it up and fly together then?

I'm probably going to go With the micro for now and then consider a 500fbl kit for m birthday at the end of July. Many on heliadics are saying the 500 size is a perfect first heli.

user error?
aslong as metal to metal is threadlocked
bearings are greased
feathering shaft is greased
bearings arent ceased
soldering is good
and you give the heli a quick check over before the flight nothing should go wrong.

you can but those thingies now that will hover your heli on the spot for you , they come with a ccd sensor that scans the ground and makes sure its not slowly floating away.

i guess its only a matter of time until failsafes are GPS coordinates that your heli flies to and hovers at until it gets a signal aswell

ive never known a battery to just stop working, you should have your esc set so you start to slowly lose power as the battery nears the low voltage cut off anyway

The 500 is 10" longer, quite a bit bigger I believe. I'm told the 500 doesn't bring too bigger crash costs where the 550 and above do bring a bigger bill.
