RC Planes

900mhz video systems do exist for video tx/rx. They're actually even recommended, for the lack of interference. 2.4ghz / 5.8ghz seem to be about the worst, due to heavy interference. They are the cheapest though.

UHF is the best for long range R/C, ignoring video transmission, but i think you actually need a provisional ham license for that. It might be better to not discuss legalities and other confentious stuff here, as it will dwarf all other inferesting chat in no time. Rcgroups seems better for that.

Not a great idea if you lost control and it came down and hit someone.

best to go and fly out in the country. Why is everyone so obsessed with FPV at the moment. Go fly a RC plane like we have been doing for 35+ years.

It is fun, there is skills involved, weather plays a huge part on landings. Plus nothing better that coming in for a nice approach and doing a gentle touch and go then shooting round and coming in for a nice landing.

From reading lots about this, I think it's just because the technology has increased rapidly in the past few years, and the thought of controlling planes remotely via video link is appealing to pretty much everyone.

Ah 900mhz is illegal, right.

That tx on the rcgroups forums was said to have backorders of 4 months of stock. Maybe that's wrong, but you might have to wait a while for your other bits to arrive if that's the case. :p

Seems you went a bit mental in the burglary thread, so you might not be able to respond for a while :P, but Taggart seems to be someone to ask about how to build planes.

What I want to know about buildng planes is how you sculpt the profile of the wing? Is this an exact science, or you just just layer some foam and it kinda just does the trick?

Both my orders have now shipped! Finally. 3 weeks after ordering! :p My batteries will arrive after my plane, but the charger comes with the planes so I'll just order a stand-in battery for the meantime from Giantcod so I have something to play with when I arrive.

Still need to modify my FlySky 9x so I can flash it and have a backlight, and my server PSU for charging should now also be on its way. Something else I can tinker with. :)

Yes I imagine it will take a while. :p I didn't realise you could make a wing so easily, I thought they had to be a very precise shape, a la big planes and the like.

Are they sturdy enough to carry decent batteries and props and all that? I saw that one guy on rcgroups uses a glue to harden the surfaces, is that what you do?

At lunch I thought I'd have a go at modifying my FlySky 9x with the Smartieparts board, thinking that I wouldn't be able to finish it, as I have the V1 board.

Turns out I have V2 board, so was able to do it all. I have the backlight installed and a USB connector now hanging out of the battery compartment. Unfortunately I have to find a mini USB lead now and do some work, so I can't flash it yet, but will be giving it a go tonight.

Looking forward to the backlight most of all at the moment, and the potential to turn off the sodding beep. And swap the +/- buttons round, as they're back to front. :p

I'll have to read that when I'm not drunk. It'll make more sense. :p

I managed to flash the firmware of my FlySky 9x earlier, and it it looks like it supports PPM, PXM (? is PCM in there somewhere?) and DSM2! Which - I think - is what the Orange Spektrum receivers I ordered use? That would be a bonus if it works with those receivers! Also I can see that I can change the number of channels from 4 to 16. Awesome. Undercarriage, flaps, bombs, miniguns, lights, FPV, exploding dildos - here I come.

So it's infinitely better already. It knows my name, it has numerous more options, interacting with the menus (which are doubled by holding down the Exit button and a direction on the d-pad) is huge better... I just don't know what any of it does. :p

It somehow looks a lot more impressive when it's backlit. :p  It is munching my 8 x AA batteries at an alarming rate though, even though I'm not doing anything, so next will be the cheap Lipo mod.

Sounds good! And yes DSM2 is Spektrum, didn't realise it could do that. Very tempting to get hold of one now and give my Dad my 6EXA. :o

It was £55 for the transmitter with an 8 channel receiver included, then about £30~ for the Smartieparts board and (included) backlight.

The PSU has arrived for me to start modding. 32amps at 12v of charging power. ;)

you still need the module for it :P

Bugger. Thought that was too easy. :p

This dude has got an excellent, if slow, because he's not English, tutorial on how to use the er9x firmware on Youtube. I am starting to get the idea around mixes and so forth. He explains airbrakes, splitting ailerons and all that jazz. Sounds awesome. :D

You got your stuff yet arknor?

I use an old AT style psu for my power supply, modded it by putting banana lead connectors on the top, my charger isn't a very high rate one so it has enough power for it.

Out of interest, how much are server psu's to pick up?

Edit - Looking on the net sub £10?! Seems really cheap for a good power supply, 32A at 12v aswell, now that explains why you see some people hooking up 2 to get 24v.

Yeah, the one I have upstairs was £9.99 inc. P&P. Obviously they're just recycling servers, whipping out bits and flogging them on eBay for cheap. I have a link to a 100amp server PSU but it's £45~ or so. Thought that for what I need, and more importantly what I want to spend, I'd keep it right down.

It's piece of piddle to wire up as well, only looks like another 10 minute job just to get it going with 32a output.

re: 24v - that appears to be more complicated. If the two cases touch then they become live, or something like that, so you either have to poke around internally or ensure they will never touch somehow. Thinking about it I might pick up another whilst they're about as they're so cheap and have a go in the future, but for the time being I don't really want the risk of electrocuting myself!

cool, definatly post up a video and how much it weighs when you get it.

Will do. Probably take a couple of weeks to get here, though they have shipped it already.

it will probably change to awaiting customs charging :P
track it on this website http://track2.postoffice.co.uk

I am tracking that website rather regularly now. :p Hopefully it clears customs relatively quickly so I can pay the charges and get cracking. Would be nice to have it for the weekend as it's a fairly quiet one for once!

That 17 year old doing the 3D flying.... wow.

EDIT: Reminder for myself, this, but VirtualDub and Deshaker looks pretty handy in making your videos look like they haven't been shot by someone that is convulsing. :p

Am I one of the chosen few? I'm trying to read it against yours arknor, but it doesn't match up.

Cool, thanks. I expect I won't be lucky as the next bits are where the charges will hit. Muchos gracias, hermano.

Looks like I still have a week to wait judging by yours. How can they say it's a 48 hour international service (the Express 48) if it takes way longer? edit.. I suppose they're just talking about the bit from Hong Kong to the Uk. :o

EMS is an alternative post service? I initially tracked mine through these guys, which isn't EMS by the looks of it.

I don't agree with this admin charge rubbish. That is taking the royal wee rather much.

You guys got any idea where I can order a soldering iron and a set of small screwdrivers? I might as well get both at once - first to wire up my server PSU, 2nd to take apart from iPhone which has recently died. :o
