re-formating computers

Because they're your mates! If you can't do something nice for them then what sort of person are you??? By all means get a couple of pints off them or whatever but I'm not so desperate for cash that I'd ask them for money for helping them out fix their PC.

Maybe just me.

Of course but with my mates at least, they all have a skill that I will take advantage of at some point. Beer is always exchanged in return for a favour as well. If you're really that strapped for time then you can always just tell them that as well.

If it's a mate of a mate of a mate type thing then fair enough I guess.

What worries me is that is that in one month he has formatted 3 mates computers where in 21 years I have formatted 3 mates computers.
I like to sit down and work myself through the problem before the inevitable happens.
Too many people think that a 'fix' is to format a computer.

Maybe you should get more mates? :)

If you're suffering from windows corruption and you have your windows CD you can just bang it in and run an SFC scan and it'll fix\replace any corrupted files.

Thats never ever worked for me in the 12 years i've been using windows. Windows repair features are useless tbqh.

Can you explain what the difference between getting a couple of pints or getting £5 is please?
I get paid in Newcastle Brown but the Taxman would still view it as money.

I personally don't charge friends or family, cos, well, they're friends and family.
BUT, these same friends and family can and will exploit/take advantage of your knowledge. I never ask for anything, but if they offer (depends on what they offer), i may accept something.

As already said, when everyone wants your time to fix their pc, and you do this all day as a job, its the last thing you want to do at night. I'd prefer to spend time with my family. So i think its no bad thing to charge when you're valuable time is being taken up.

That said, i'm still a mug and do most of it for free.....eejit!

tbh i find it easier to reformat and reinstall windows than to try and diagnose/fix a software problem half the time :p
This.

But to be honest, when I was fixing computers for a living people used to prefer to pay a bit extra for my time and have their system fixed rather than have to start again. It was very rare that it was so broken I couldn't put it back to how it was.

I tend to do friends computer support, however I tend to shy away from anything software/hardware related that's currently under warranty. In those cases I just give advice or do the talking over the phone.

If I don't know you that well then I will charge.

I try not to format, where possible. But often its the quickest and simplest solution.

for past month I have re-formated 3 of my mates computers. I havn't charged them.

Maybe I could start doing this for abit of extra cash.. maybe advertise?

Anyone else doing for for abit of pocket money?

It depends, how fast do you want to lose friends?

If i had to format for my mates id just say you can pay me back with a pint sometime :)

Can you format c:/ in DOS with modern Window operating systems? I seem to recall not being able to, i.e. the OS prevented it.

Or was that deltree?

A:\ deltree.exe c:\ will do a nice job of deleting all of your directories. I think it was still around in Windows 98.
