re-formating computers

I think sometimes formatting is a little easier. Obviously if you haven't tried running spy bot or what not then :p

But I often find that backing up data and starting a fresh can sometimes be quicker.

On one of my friends laptop's, she said it was awful but it wasn't that bad. Spybot, a few virus scanners, a defrag, nuke old / unneeded applications and it was running fine.

If a virus scanner alone takes >1 hour (with no guarantee it will clean it) then its usually quicker to do a backup/re-install.

No point finding out what caused the issue if its a friends/family machine as most probably its between the monitor and the chair.

My rate of pay is a crate of beer for friends/family.

I refuse to fix any of my friends PC's these days, it got to a point where i was getting people turning up at my door at 8pm asking for me to get their PC working there and then, saying "Tim said you'd sort me out, wha?".

I just do my own now. Its not hard, they can learn to do theirs themselves.

and this post is the exact reason why my repair business is so busy, "yeh my mate tried to fix it and it hasnt worked since" or "my mate says he'll do it next week" its brilliant for me. Sometimes formatting it is easier but think about the end user, can they reinstall and setup all their apps and emails etc? thats where customer service comes in.
