Re-installing xp with no support cd?..

Hi.

My mums got a Medion pc that she got from pc world about 4 years ok..Lately its been playing up and generally taking ages to load programs etc..Ive had a quick look and there is so much **** installed that it just needs formatting.

Now she cant find the support cd that she had with it so how do i go about returning it back to factory settings/state without it? (if i even can?)

Any ideas??

Do you have or can you get hold of an ordinary install cd (OEM Install CD) for the version of windows already loaded? If you do you can do a clean install from that and download all the drivers from medion’s website. The Windows XP CD licence key you'll need should be stuck to the pc somewhere.

Hi..No i dont have access to an OEM Install CD im afraid..

Under hard disks on her pc there are 3 drives...

BOOT (C: ) , BACKUP (D: ) , RECOVER (E: )


Now ive looked on the medion website and it says this:
Hard Drive-based Recovery System − Recovery files are placed on a separate partition of the hard drive that can be accessed if system recovery is needed. No CDs are needed and in most cases the PC can "heal" itself.

If i click on the E: drive the only program i can run is called retten.exe which opens in a dos kind of way but nothing happens..

any idea as my old dear is having a proper go at me over this.. :rolleyes:

You could try pressing f11 at boot. I know that worked for another make of PC

You could always D/L an OEM copy of XP and use nlite to create an ISO and use the CD key on the PC to activate it

Ok stupid question i know but ive really not had a lot to do with pc's since building mine 2 years ago so have forgotten what to do..


I f11 which took me to the bios..then what?

How do i format?...give me a clue and im sure ill remember lol :rolleyes: :)

Yes, although there is an issue about making an unautherised copy disk but provided you use the product key that is tied to the PC then your'e OK.

Sorry about f11, I am not sure what f key you press to start the recovery sequence. Try them all it can't do any harm :)
 
Ok..Ive download an oem version and have started the install...It all started ok until just now :eek: ......The monitor just says "input not supported" and nothing is happening.. :rolleyes: ...she's really going to kill me...

Im guessing the drivers for the monitor need to be installed but how do i do that when i cant see anything???
 
Doesn’t sound too good, has the install finished? Or did it happen during the install?

What’s the spec of the computer pref the graphics card?

By default all graphic cards are supported in the XP install it will just use a generic PNP driver to me it sounds as though something else is the problem. You checked to see if the leads are in firmly? and the card is seated properly?


Just a few suggestions.



Edit: the OEM XP you downloaded is probally the likley cause maybe its full of corrupt drivers and is full of spyware/adware, can you not borrow a friends or familys copy?

Hi..

The install was half way through..It re-started the pc now i cant see a thing..

Really dont know the spec..

Cant see it being the card etc as it was ok before..Its defo something ive done..Ill try re-booting wish me luck. :(
 
This is strange..I turned it off then on -- I could then see what was going on now its just gone back to "input not supported" :( :( ...im dead
 
Thats probally the problem, you should do a full format not quick and then install the OS, this should solve the problem.
 
One of the F keys at boot up should start the recovery re-install process.
Use Pause/break to slow down the boot up if you don't see the message which tells you which one it is as it goes past.
