Hey guys I've had but new spec for abit now and since I've got it running quite stable I would like to actually start overclocking.I have no experience in overclocking but would like to get my system up to its best.

I have:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)
Fitted with the standard i7 cooler.
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel (PVT36G1600LLK)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular Power Supply
LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP A04

If anyone could let me know how I can go about Oc'ing my system, that would be cool. I've got easytune installed but wondered whether that would be the best way to go?

Ok before I start trying to OC the CPU, is it ok that I'm using my retail cooler that came with the cpu? Or would I need to install a new one?

Well you might get a small oc out of the retail cooler, but if you want a proper oc you will need better. A corsiar H50 will get you too 4ghz easy, as will a titin fenrir

Hello L1ght,

That looks like a superfast machine you have there crickey! . . . did you build that yourself or what it prebuilt?

Have you run any stability tests, logged temps and simple stuff like that with the machine running @ default speeds? . . . it's usually a good first step before you proceed to break your machine in record time! :p

Well I'm sure it's pretty decent as it is now but if your craving even more speed overclocking will let you do just that . . . in some respects overclocking is quite simple but in other respects it is hideously complex, YMMV but just do your homework and with a little patience you will get the result you want hopefully! ;)

You got a fair bit of ground to cover and the more homework and research you do the less work an OcUK forum member has to do, on a good day you may get someone you will have the time and patience and knowledge to take you though the whole process from start to finish but that's a big ask, in the mean time almost everything you need to know in terms of basic/concepts/guidelines etc can be gleaned from following the link below!

Thanks for the replies guys. Ok I won't touch the CPU for the moment until I get a cooler.

Big Wayne, Yeah I built this system myself, and was quite unstable when I was running windows XP, but since I've installed XP I've had no issues at all with anything, runs very smoothly.

I actually have a Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir CPU Cooler knock'n around somewhere as I couldn't figure out how to install it at the time I was building the machine. And since I was having problems with the system I never got round to having another shot at it. Since then I've found a few reviews with some more helpfull instructions rather than the one that actually came with the cooler.

Also my brother has just ordered basically the same spec as me, although he got the overclocked bundle, so all the work has already been done for him. So this has also kicked me into gear as his i7 is clocked at 4ghz and mine is in the 2.6ghz region!

Hey guys I just went into my bios and did a quick health check and saw my cpu was at 89degree's. This isn't good is it?

89 and idle is way too high, check the heatsink is mounted correctly and your voltages are not too high. should be mid to high 50s (well mine is).

yep it seems to be running at around 70. You look like you have a similar speck to me paradisiac, what type of cpu cooler are you running? I'm just running the standard retail at the moment.

mines on the stock cooler for now until i get a new case.
i get around 54deg idle and 77deg max under load with OCCT. had to lower my vcore to 1.10 though to keep the temps under 80deg

yeah, can probably go lower but that got me down to a safe temp so am happy for now. best to start there for now and then if that still doesnt help, then i would say its probably fan related.

Hey paradisiac, is there any chance you could let me know how to get to the vcore settings? I can't seem to find them in the cmos. Cheers

Nah found it, but does not seem to of made much of a difference. I'm guessing I need to fit my cpu cooler, which I'll do friday night when I've got some time.
Still running idle at around the 70's
