The cpu is way under powered for quad sli isnt it? 680i mobo and four 8800GS with a E2200. It's even at stock!!

Its fine for folding :)
I use my i7 920 with crossfire for games.

Going to check it for power usage now.

Edit
i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz
5 Harddrives
4 Case fans
2x4850

Idle 252
Load 535

Have it running on a Seasonic M12 500W.... I hope it dont go pop :)

@muppet: If the power draw at the socket is 535W and the PSU is 80% efficient, it's running at near it's limit. If you've been running it for a while then I expect it'll be fine :)

For me, PC in sig.
Idle: ~120W
Load (Prime95 and FurMark): ~340W

Below is a table showing the Watt draw for the 3 PSU's I own running the system below.

68363821vp3.jpg

System Specs
Asus Rampage Formula X48 Mobo
Intel E8500 [email protected] (Idle @3GHz with speedstep)
4x2GB DDR2 PC5300 @ 500MHz
HD4850@700/1155
3x 7200rpm HDD's
DVD, Sound Card, TV Card, 4x120mm fans.

I found that running Furmark and Prime95 together produced higher power draw than any other combined GPU/CPU software stress testing or gaming. Running Furmark and Prime individually shows how much the GPU and CPU consume each when loaded.

I also found that my cheap £70 "Hi-Power" branded modular PSU performed more efficiently than branded (and highly acclaimed) PSU's costing significantly more. All PSU's had rock solid rails and run very quietly all of the time.

*All measurement taken from the plug socket and averaged over a 10min period.

BFG GeForce GTX 295 1792MB (Stock Clock)
OCZ 2x2GB PC3-1333C7 PlatinumWD VelociRaptor 300GB
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium - Fatal1ty Champion Series
Dell 2407WFP 24" A04
3 x YATE LOON 120mm Case Fan - D12SL-12
Ambit Broadband Modem

idle = 235W

load = 332W to 342W (Using Prime95 Blend)

load = 420W to 449W (Using Crysis Benchmark)

Is that with the monitor and everything or?
Yup thats everything off the one socket.

The results can be misleading because the Dell 2407WFP 24" A04 uses 110W off it's own socket, also modem runs off it's own socket, probally uses about 5W max will check later.

I'll re-run the test tommorow with just the PC connected to the Plug-in Power & Energy Monitor.

Seasonic M12D SS-850W Mod PSU :D :D :D
192W / 221W = 87.9% Efficiency (Cold Load Result)
355W / 404W = 87.9% Efficiency (Hot Load Result)
523W / 599W = 87.3% Efficiency (Hot Load Result)

Awesome time to bring this thread back. Despite my post back in this thread I never kept the 9800GTX+ as I got made redundant the same day!

Now a few months later and back in a new job I just picked up a Asus 250GTS 1Gb and I'm keen to see how it performs against the current 8800GT in terms of power use.

I'll update the results tonight :)
I've decided my next PC build will use low power mid-range quad parts in an attempt to build a working quad core PC with everything I want and uses less than 100w at idle :)

everyone would hate my power draw.....
boot = 149w graually climbing to the below.
EIST disabled idle = 296-347w (cant remember and not at PC)
Prime95 + Furmark = 906w draw.

This is just my PC, not including my medusa amp box, logitech x-540s, 30" monitor, and without my two external drives connected.

edit: rig in sig, and when all is at stock volts and speeds

Did you check and compare the voltages, particularly the +12v?
If one were lower than another you won't be able to do a direct comparison of efficiency just from the wall input. :)

The Hi-power could well be under powering (current, not voltage) components, and therefore using less Power :D

You'd need professional testing equipment to compare efficiency between PSU.
