In my eyes though if you're going to be using a laptop for gaming I would go for such a high res or the gfx card wont be able to handle current games long if at all.

1920 x 1200 res 17"'s have been around for ages, mainly on top end laptops such as sony toshiba etc, they're all well and good for HD but probably wouldnt recommend them for native 3d gaming
Not really mate, the speed of the graphics chipset (and the memory it has) will influence performance (even with things like Vista's Aero interface), but you won't be absolutely unable to run particular resolutions just because of the graphics chipset, these days. Display resolution is dependent on the display itself, not the chipset.
